Okay - fine, I will cough up the $40, but I installed the beloved VUESCAN and it says it sees a LIDE35 (wrong, I have a LIDE20) and that it needs Canon drivers intalled first (why, one might ask..), so I went to Canon and tried to download and install the most recent driver (for Tiger) here.  The drivers will not install (naturally enough, since they are not made for lion).

Now what?? I am willing to pay $40 so I don't have to hassle around on forums, but it seems I have to pay AND hassle around. grrrrrr

Excuse my grumpiness - I am normally very friendly

I was grumpy too.  So I sympathize.  I don't remember the installation details, but it all went smoothely for me.

The hassling stopped when I surrendered to VUESCAN.  I did ask the seller/programmer a question later and he was responsive.  I can't give you a personal guarantee, but as I said I am/was happy.

Another way is if you have Parallels or VMware.  You can run a Windows instance in the VM.  It can take over the USB and do the scan.  So you can run the stock Canoscan drivers in Windows in the VM on the Mac.

Again, the Sane drivers do work, but, for me, only through the command-line (terminal) or the "Snac" free program.  "Snac" is very limited, but it will do a full-page scan that you can crop in Preview after the fact.

I had trouble with this for ages, then found this website, which describes how to install it in layman's terms:

Phew. Hope that helps any non-tech-savvies like me.

Thank you tamboril! Snac was amazing and worked like a charm!

VueScan worked straight away for me on my CanoScan Lide 20

Is anyone else getting distorted images from TWAIN-SANE? I tried resinstalling and restarting, but so far I keep getting distorted images (OS 10.8.2). Has anyone else been able to solve this problem?

In the Image Capture app, the scan can be distorted if you select "Overview" and then "Scan".  However, if you select "Hide Details" and then "Scan", the image is just fine.

Sometimes the "Hide Details" option is greyed out, so just select "Overview" "Scan", let it do it's distorted thing, than scan again using "Hide Details" "Scan" to get the correct image.

Generally, I find that I have to run the 'distorted' image scan now and again - usually if I've updated something.

    Hope that helps.

Don't know to put up a star - but vuescan worked for me.

I hope this helps for some of you.

After installing TWAIN-SANE you can perfectly scan on high resoluton with Acrobat Pro

Just go to (translated from Dutch) File > Make PDF > From Scanner.

After this you can select your quality and save it to many different types of files.

I have a Lide 20 and OsX 10.8 and spent hours trying to get this to work.

I followed the post from ITSMEJULIETTE  6 posts ago and followed the link.  Download the 3 packages in the correct order, they all seemed to load OK but when I went to Image Capture (through applications) it couldn't find the scanner.

So I went through Print and Scan (system preferences) and hit the + button and it found it, yeh and it worked, however the interface was a little primitive.

I then rebooted and went through Photoshop File Import SANE and a better interface surfaced.  So at least it seems to work OK now, otherwise I was prepared to throw the scanner out.  I've only just done this so it's early days and a rather different layout but all seems OK.

    Thanks everyone
