TS1702 Safari and other applications unexpectedly quits on my iPad, how can I fix it?

I got the iPad as a gift this past Christmas, and on numerous occasion Safari and iBooks unexpectedly quits. What's causing the problem and how can it be fixed?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3)
