Check with your ISP to make sure they don't have a limit on the Max size of any single file that can be downloaded... Several US providers have this issue (Comcast, Verizon and Cox to name a few) and in Europe BT in particular is known for having this 'hidden' limitation on some accounts..
If your ISP has this particular limit placed on your acount, ask them to remove it either permanently or temporarily so you can fully download the additional content...
Otherwise, check the amount of free space you have left on your system HD..... as you can only download and intially initially to your system HD... You can move loops etc later but you have to download and install to your system drive in the first place...

Thanks for that, however I have already checked with my ISP who, even though I have reached my monthly data limit, have not limited my data as I have a business account with them so just have to pay for each gig I go over. I also have nearly 200 GB available on my hard drive so I am really confused about what is going on, I have managed to download 296 MB of data 4 times now and each time I try again it starts from 0 MB again.

Its not related to the monthly limit.. Some ISPs also have a max size limit per file... as odd as that sounds..
Comcast for example, place a 1.9GB max size limit on any single file for some accounts... and as the Additional content is downloaded in 2GB segments.. the download fails everytime you reach 1.9GB..
However, there is another possiility that somehow the cache where the temp files for the additional downloads, may have got screwed up resulting in this issue.. and trying to locate them, can be quite tricky as the folder names change...though the general location remains the same...
So.. you may find this thread of interest and possible help..

Thanks for that Art of Sound, I have checked with my ISP and there is no limit on parcel size or amount of data on my account. They have advised me I need to contact Apple for resolution of this problem. I have run applejack and fixed all permissions etc plus I have plenty of space over 100GB available on my hard drive. However the same thing happens everytime that I get to 296MB and then download freezes and eventually after 10 or so hours gives me message that cannot be completed. I have attached screenshot of frozen download stauts. If anyone can help me or give me a link to apple to resolve this as it is very frustrating.

I think their advice, in this instance, is what you should..
Call Apple... And explain what is happening...
