What is iMessage

Can you please tell me what iMessage is and the basics to it

    It's a free text messaging alternative that will send and receive messages with other owners of iOS devices, either over wifi or cellular (you have the option to restrict it to wifi only to avoid using your data plan, if desired).  You turn in on in Settings>Messages on an iOS device, and in System Preferences>iCloud on a Mac running OS X Mountain Lion.


    iMessage is free of charge, and only requires a supported device and an Apple ID.  Here are more details:

    Yes, assuming you have a messaging plan with your carrier.  Texts sent to non-iOS users well be sent as normal sms messages, and messages to iOS users that cannot be sent as iMessages (because the receiver for some reason is unable to receive iMessages at this time) will also eventually time out and be sent as normal sms messages (although you can restrict this in settings so they won't be, if desired).
