Obviously, you're right aabout the limited selection. Can't speculate about future templates…no one here knows their plans.
In the meantime, you could open the v.4 templates in v.5. And there are third party template sources as well.

If you had Motion 4 installed, then you have access to all of those templates. They "live" in:
root HD > Library > Application Support > Final Cut Studio > Motion > Templates
When you open them, Motion 5 will ask you if you want to open the original -- I usually feel its better to Open as "Untitled" and save as to another location (they will all open as "regular" Motion projects, not FCPX effect types -- you do have the option to File > Publish Template and from the popup check Publish as Final Cut Generator which will make them available from both FCPX and Motion 5 startup dialog.)

Almost all of the supplemental content gets stored in the Motion and Final Cut apps themselves. You will find all supplemental Motion content in either the Library section or when you start up, you should see a list of Compositions which includes several remade generators from Motion 4/FCP7 in the left column of the dialog (Atmospheric, Decode, etc...). These additional generators can also be found in FCPX in the generators browser.
For the supplemental update: all of it was upgrades for retina displays... so, nothing really new, just "improved".

I have all of the supplimental compositions showing up in Motion's project browser but not in the library. Also none of them appear in FCPX generators browser, Any thoughts on what may be wrong?

I think I actually "mis-spoke" -- check the Themes section for the new content. I've developed over 100 projects in Motion, I can no longer keep track of what's where. However, I think you can find the new Motion material for FCPX in:
root/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro/Library/Content
root/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro/Templates/Compositions (a.k.a. Themes)

Some of the Motion material ie 3 of the 8 compositions are in the location you indicated. The others are in the Motion app package. I looked in the themes browser in FCPX but no joy. Just one of those mysteries I guess. If I ever need them I'll just publish them from Motion as FCP generators.

They should all be here:
Just open and save... as you said. It might have been a promotional thing to get more people to buy Motion... Before the supplemental update, I had already been going through and converting some of the older Motion 4 templates... and... it gets confusing sometimes figuring which is which (except I always add considerably more options — but I had been using the same names — for example, I released at least a couple of them under the same Motion 4 name like Skyline Lower Third, and Brush Lower Third...)
If you have Motion 4, it's no big deal updating those templates for FCPX (unless you're converting from SD to HD... whole other animal). Find them, double click on them and open in Motion 5 as Untitled, , publish parameters "to taste" and Save... [Motion 4 templates located at: root/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Studio/Motion/Templates/].
