Hello,

I just got my first Mac, so forgive me if this is a dumb question...

I've had my iMac for about a month and today, randomly, the Remote Disc icon showed up in the Finder.  I can delete it from the sidebar, but have not been able to delete it from the main Finder window.  (That is, if I select John's iMac in the menu bar, it shows Macintosh HD, Network, and Remote Disc).  I've tried to disable and restart all of the items on the menu bar...  but whenever I select John's iMac, it always returns.

It does not appear when I boot the machine in Safe Mode.

I noticed it today after I installed a virtual machine (to run Ubuntu) using Virtualbox.  I was afraid that that caused the Remote Disc to appear, so after trying everything I could find online to remove it, I uninstalled the virtual machine and made sure to delete all the files associated with Virtualbox...  still no luck.

I called tech support...  and while they were nice, I was not confident their answer was truthful...  after about forty minutes of trouble shooting, I was basically told that "Um, it's a feature and it just kind of magically appears..."  I wish I were making that up.

I even went so far as to try and reinstall the operating system using the recovery mode...  no luck.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

iMac

Where in Finder is it showing up, if you can post a screen shot (Shift - Command - 4) that would be helpful.

You can also try DVD or CD sharing: Using Remote Disc

It appears in the main finder window...  and it will not let me delete it.

I also realize that I forgot to mention in my description- I also deleted some window preferences today...  but I don't think any of them dealt with the Finder window...  For some reason, Firefox got weird randomly as well...  It stopped moving to the dock and the window would not become active when I clicked it...  I read online that sometimes something in the window preference files caches weird and it said delete all of the files in that folder...  (the article said they were temporary files and would reset once the windows were reopened).

I suspect you turned on Sharing, try Sharing - and see what boxes are checked. Also, I edited my first post, please look at the link I added.

First, thanks for your help.  Initially, based on my research, that's what I thought happened, too...  but as you can see from the screenshot below, I don't even have that as an option...  I tried to install the update from the link you provided to see if that would add the option to the settings tab... but it won't let me install it because I have a newer version running on my machine already...

So is this the only system on your network? Also what model iMac?

There are a few things on my network...

My wife's mini iPad and work computer (a PC which has not been set up for any kind of sharing)

    Roku (streaming player)

That's it though...  could the iPad be causing it somehow?

Also- it's a 21.5" iMac (one of the newer ones), 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

    Running OS X Version 10.8.2.

So no DVD drive right?  (That's why you don;t have the sharing option in system prefs) That remote disk icon represents the DVD drive on another computer not yours. Its a way to share a DVD drive to systems with no DVDs.

When it happens you can try shutting down the other equipment you have to see if it affects it any. Not sure if there is a way to query the icon to see who is providing the disk. You might want to search to see if there is a way.

As all my systems here have DVDs Even if I turn that option I don;t see the remote disk so I can;t poke around.

    regards

    Hi Frank,

My iMac does not have an optical drive...  nor does the iPad.  The PC is not in the apartment.

I've just changed my network password to ensure nobody else was on it...  but the wretched thing still appears.

    Thanks for your help though.

You could try clicking on it to see what shows up, might give you a clue as to where it is coming from.   But it looks like your Mac thinks something out there is serving a DVD player.

If nothing else helps you can always try a re-install of the OS.

Nothing comes up when I click on it...  and I already spent 5 hours today reinstalling the OS...

I'm trying to figure out what is different in safe mode that it won't load it compared to regular mode, where it does...

Your new to the Mac OS, so I'm going to give you a word of advice. Don't waste time resinstalling the OS. That's a Windows thing, not a Mac thing. We rarely, and when I say rarely, I really mean never, reinstall the OS unless we're selling the Mac, or we've purchased and installed a new hard drive (and even then, that's not the way to do it). You will hardly ever see a recommendation from one of the long-time experts on here to reinstall OSX. I've been using OSX since nearly the day it was introduced, on dozens of Macs, and I have not once reinstalled OSX, except for the two reasons I mentioned. Please don't waste your time doing that.

Don't worry about the remote disc, it is not a problem. It will only have something on it if there is another computer on your network. BTW, a Playstation3 on my networks makes that show up on my iMac whenever the PS3 is turned on.

In Safe Mode the system is brought up in a minimal state, no external disks are mounted for example. This explains why it doens;t show up in safe mode. It would be more interesting if it did!

As you did an OS re-install there is no benifit to going through that again, I am surprised it took you so long. Normally with aa decent internet connection an OS install should take an hour or so tops. Did you have problems?

Another thing to try, when the remote disk is in Finder select it and do a Get Info. Perhaps the Info window will give you some information.

And I would still suggest that when the sysetm is up and the remte disk appears try to take all your other internet connected items off the network. See if anything changes.

OK after digging around this AM I believe that what you are seeing on new non-DVD equipped Macs is the correct behavior.

As I said on my systems (all with DVD drives) I didn;t see the Remote Disk icon in Finder even if I was sharing a DVD drive from one system. This is because the ability to see remote DVD drives is turned off in the OS by default on my systems. If I turn it on I see the Remote disk icon even if no other system is sharing its DVD.

So in your case because you are on a new Mac with no DVD that capability is turned on by default. While it would be possible to turn it off there is nothing to be gained by doing so.

Hope this clears this up for you.

    regards
