Hey Thank You for the post. I have the exact same issue where my fan will run at ~5500rpm for absolutely no reason with light browsing. It lasts about a minute. If you find out anything new, please let us know.

Same issue here. Just had my retina replaced for the second time. First issue was with display image persistance, but my last two machines have been suffering this ridiculous fan issue. This is a $3000 machine, give me a break. This is not software related, as I did not use any Time Machine backup to restore files on the newest replacement, yet it appears to be worse than the last. I have never experienced this on any of the six Macs I've owned. Don't let someone tell you "it's normal". Starting to wish I would've kept my original retina with the image persistance problem. At least I didn't have to raise my voice to talk to the person sitting next to me while using it.

I have had the exact same issue you are describing here. Every so often the fans would ramp up to over 5000rpm even though temperatures are no more than 50degC. anyhow i did some tests and realised that i had a Utorrent open. After closing this the issue has stopped completely and the fans just stay at 2000rmp unless temps spike up.

i just got my 15 macbook pro retina 2.7ghz. Almost immediately I encountered the fan problem while setting up my prefences. It has happened about 3 times after that during 4 hours of total use. It would be great if it was a software problem and they patch it up asap. I dont want to deal with returns. Hopefully we can hear an answer from the cupertino kids soon.

Same issue for me. I have a 15 rMBP, 2.4GHz. Early 2013 Model. Fans turn on full blast under no load. Temps normal. I'll monitor this thread.

I have been in touch with apple corporate executive relations.  After 1 week, they simply asked if I could return the computer to the store.  They will never admit or deny an issue.  Based on the fact that I am running a mid 2012 macbook pro retina next to the new refreshed 2013 macbook pro retina, I can comfortably say that the intermittent fan spikes are not normal.

Your best bet is to return the computer before the 14 day return policy expires.  I expected Executive Relations to send me a replacement - tested by engineering.  Unfortunately, the response deviated materially from my expectations.

Thank You so much for the update. If this is the route that Apple is taking after Steve Jobs, I'll be going back to PC and save half as much $.

In addition to the intermittent fan spikes, there is a Safari rendering issue.  I am not sure if you have encountered it yet, but Executive Relations admitted that the issue resulting in 3 returns is now a confirmed and known problem.  If, however, you visit the genius bar or contact AppleCare, they will be unaware of this issues existence.

I rate Apples executive customer relations a D+.  A for returning phone calls and F for solutions!

I have returned my rMBP 15" 16GB 512Gb that had that fan spikes issue.

Now I have a brand new rMBP with the same characteristics, and the same problem.

Hope this is a software problem that could be fixed with a firmware update...

Same thing with me. Got a new one and same problem. Don't know if I should keep it or keep returning it.

I also got the same macbook changed for the 2.4 ghz model, but still the same problem. I also went to the genius bar before I changed my macbook, he did a hardware test and clean install, but the problem still exists...

Wow. You got the 2.4ghz and its still doing it! Must be software then. Or a really horrible manufacturing problem. Apple must address this.

Yep, it's horrible, I hope it's gonna be fixed in the 10.8.3 update, does anybody know when it releases? the beta testing begon 2 months so it has to come soon i guess...

with the audio stuttering included, those are the 2 most annoying bugs...

I just tried to get a clean install of the OS, and if I only put a apple lossless file, the fans start to kick in. I also noticed while i was downoading the OS, the Macbook kicked in 7 times in about 30 minutes...

I just called Apple, but they didn't know what the problem could be, they only suggest SMC reset, this helped, but after a reboot it was back again. I'm now heading to a apple store, I hope they can fix it!
