The "report junk" button has completely stopped working.

I couldn't get Apple Mail to tag a single mail to get into the junk folder.

All mail goes into the Inbox.

Why is there no upgrade that fixes the problem with Mail?

    There is an upgrade available.

    It is called Gmail.

I say this seriously and also with the following context: I own just about every Apple product they make, and have since the launch of Mac OSX. I still have a perfectly functioning iPhone 1 (and every phone since). iPods same. Laptops same. Still rely on my Mac Pro tower. I've had a large position in Apple stock since Steve Jobs return - around $7 split adjusted. I'm still a very strong believer in Apple the company, and their entire approach to design, customer experience and integrated ecosystems.

All of that said, after originally trying to solve this problem over the course of many months and contributing to this discussion board - I have started migrating multiple email accounts over to Gmail. I've been a light user of Gmail for quite some time. Now I've become a power user and all I can say is for everyone else that is trying to run an Email service, it is game over. If you want to rely on a large number of mail rules, and have a reasonably sophisticated nested folder structure - there is no comparison. For more simple users, Apple hosted email services will probably be wonderul and continue to improve.

My .mac/.icloud accounts have started to get more spam too. So doing a clean reset and going to all the people I want to be able to send me email, and give them my new gmail account has other benefits.

Good luck to everyone on this.

You were right In the first rule Apple News the last line of code reads"stop evaluating rules".  This means no other rule will be evaluated.  What I want to know is how it got there.  I'm sure Apple did not program that given the amount of people who are having problems with this.

1Charlie wrote this in reply to acyclone, but I think it makes sense. If you go to the Add Rule Settings help list and click Manage messages using rules, it points out that the rules are constantly 'fighting' incoming email, moving email and so on. The only way to stop all this is to make sure that:

    • the last rule always works, and
    • the last rule "stops evaluating rules."

To do this, before adding another rule to the list of rules, make sure "stops evaluating rules" is disabled. Next add another rule and finally cap things off with a rule like:-

          "LastRule"

if all of the following conditions are met:

               To is equal to ""

          Perform the following actions

                "Stop evaluating rules"

Since the LastRule is bound to work (not all the recipients can be empty!) we can be certain that "Stop Evaluating Rules" will occur.

That, at least, is my take on things.

Personally, I've never had a problem with spam or rule filtering and adding this "Last Rule" certainly hasn't done any harm!

Finally, if you you think Mail has an actual BUG in it, as opposed to exhibiting some sort of behaviour that's simply unexpected, I suggest you report the bug to Apple.

         http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

This is the community help area, where some Apple users try to help others. If a program has a real bug then no amount of community help will solve the problem and you'll have to contact Apple!

I think there is a disconnect here.  The problem (at least my problem) is not that a rule isn't run because another rule stops evaluation.  My problem is that within a single rule only some of the actions are performed.  I have a rule that moves a message to another folder and marks the message as read.  I know this rule runs because the emails are always moved.  But the "mark as read" portion of the rule only happens sporadically.  "Stop Evaluating Rules" is not my issue (unless I'm missing something) because the rule in question does run; it just doesn't execute all the actions.

Also the Gmail point is a good one, but I use Mail to manipulate Gmail because I also have other Exchnage accounts and cannot rely only on Gmail.  So alas I'm still using Mail.  I also have Outlook for Mac.  It's a good program but it doesn't play as well with Gmail as Mail does.

Guys what it did work for me was to disable one rule that it was by the name "MailFX" unclick the box on the left side and everything came back to normal.

I had issues with rules that generated an automatic email answer. They stopped working and now it seems that i found the problem with a misconfigured smtp server.

So check your smtp server configuration.

Hope this helps some of you.

Thanks for he reply GJW. How would I do what you suggest?

I'm still having the issue whereby sometimes the rule works and then it doesn't.

Go to mail>preferences>accounts and select the account you use to automatically answer emails then click on "outgoing mail server (smtp)" and click edit smtp server list. There you can find the configured (or misconfigured) smtp server.

You can check that all incoming and outgoing mail servers are functioning by clicking on Window>Connection Doctor in the mail menu bar.

Same here.  Had this happen for a while last year, rebuit all my rules, and they seemed to work for a time. I noticed they aren't working the other day again, though sometimes they do and sometimes they don't.  (one day a certain mail would go into the proper box, the next day it wouldn't, etc.)  I finally got sick of it and deleted ALL my rules, closed mail, reopened, and created just ONE rule to test it.  And it wouldn't work.

One message, one action, that's it.  Still won't.  I shouldn't have deleted my rules, because now I am sure I won't be able to get ANYTHING to work again.  What is the deal, this has been going on for two years at least and they haven't fixed it?? COME ON APPLE!

If you are still having the keyboard problem, have a look at the extension cable fix in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5275690?start=0&tstart=0

SurfDive45's post of 13 Sep is the one.

Not sure if the orig problem was solved. I run into this from time to time.

My solution was "Quit Mail.... then

    goto ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/

And rename any files that have the word "rules" in them

in my case Im running Maverics, with Mail 7.2 (1874)

    RulesActiveState.plist

    MessageRules.plist

    MessageRules.plist.backup

    SyncedRules.plist

    UnsyncedRules.plist

    Then restart mail.

    Recreate your desired rules.

This may be a PITA for some of you but its better than a NON working solution.

    Best.
