Purchased songs become Matched

I've encountered a problem with iTunes Match and iTunes 11.0.2. It has essentially "Matched" my previously "Purchased" songs.


Essentially, what I've done is hidden all songs from iCloud, then enabled iTunes Match hoping it would rematch my previously uploaded songs. It doesn't, by the way.


To encounter this issue, these are the steps you may follow:

1) Store songs on your Mac locally - including some that you purchased from the iTunes Store

2) Enable iTunes Match

3) Wait for your library to be matched and uploaded in the cloud

4) Disable iTunes Match

5) Go to a second Mac that does NOT have any songs in iTunes

6) Enable iTunes Match on that Mac

7) Go to Music > Songs

8) Select All songs and hit delete

9) Yes you want to hide them all from iCloud

10) Go back to the first Mac and go to Music > Songs

11) Click View > View Options and check iCloud Status and Kind

12) Enable iTunes Match

(No songs will be added to iCloud, and the iCloud Status will say "Removed" for all songs)

13) Find a song which states "Purchased..." in the Kind field

14) Right click that song and click Add to iCloud

(The iCloud Status for that song will say "Waiting")

15) Wait for the a short time, then Quit iTunes and relaunch

After doing those steps, notice that the iCloud Status for that song changes to say "Matched" yet it was a purchased song. It should say "Purchased." I don't know what problems this causes besides corrupted metadata.



My questions:

How do I fix it so that it correctly states the song is a Purchased song, not a Matched song? Is this going to create any additional problems?

    I am not sure what you are trying to do?


    If your aim is to try to get previously uploaded songs to match then here is a suggestion.


    Firstly, you don't need to sign out of match on your first computer. You can sign into match in your second computer and see all music in the cloud. You can then delete (hide) your uploaded tracks from this computer. When you go back to your first computer, the tracks will be shown as removed. Matched and purchased tracks will still be shown.


    PS you can also achieve this by creating a second library on your first computer.


    To try to get the removed tracks to match, you will need either to convert the track to different format as the original uploaded tracks are hidden on apple's servers. Alternatively, re-rip tracks if you still have the original CDs - again using different format.


    With regard previous purchases, delete and redownload from iTunes Store.

    I believe the easiest way to solve this is to delete the tracks from your iTunes library (being sure you have a good backup), go to your purchase history and re-download the purchased tracks again. If the tracks are not available for re-download then the iCloud Status of "matched" is probably accurate.

    These bits of information are not necessarily incorrect and depend on many factors. A "purchased" song can indeed be "matched" if the particular item that was originally purchased is no longer available in the store. The same goes for "purchased" tracks that get uploaded. For example I have some Jimi Hendrix Experience tracks that are Kind: Purchased AAC audio files, but have an iCloud Status of "matched" (a couple are even "uploaded"). This is because, despite the album being available in the Store, the specific album I originally purchased is no longer available. The album is no longer available for me to re-download from my purchase history. And a "Matched AAC audio file" can be uploaded. All that means is the track was downloaded from the Store. Check yoru purchase history and see if the tracks that are purchased are still available. If they are not, then they won't show up as "purchased."

I doubt any tracks were actually deleted in the past, but were, in fact "hidden." At any rate, what you say sounds like a reasonable explination of what is happening.

    I recently had 4002 error problem. As I have a large collection, I usually keep signed in to match. However, I had to sign out to resolve this error.


    The rescan took 3/4 hours but when done i got cloud status "limit exceeded". To resolve this issue I had to delete around 8k tracks in an alternative library so that they showed "removed" in icloud status - metadata etc was maintained.


    When recan was complete I found that the reason for exceeded limit was that on around 1,500 tracks I had duplicate entries - second one had download icon. After deleting the duplicates, I went through process of readding most of my removed tracks.


    I done them in small batches. Process was quick as previous matches, uploads and purchases were remembers. However I had around 20-30 previously matched tracks now uploaded. I converted them to lossless in iTunes and successfully rematched them after deleting the original matched files.


    No previously uploaded files were successfully matched.


    A had a couple of purchased files shown as matched - opted to delete but not from cloud. Redownloaded them by going to store / purchased. Status was corrected.


    One thing I'm not sure about is trying to match previously uploaded song in latest version of iTunes by converting to lossless or aiff. Another poster has reported problem new tracks - I had a problem trying to rematch a couple of songs first as AAC and as lossless.

    I can't tell you why it happens. I can say I've seen it happen and re-downloading from my purchase history fixed the issue.
