I'm backing up to a new time machine it says i need at least 1.14 TB and my internal hard drive is only 1 TB and has 37.95 GB free.  I read on the Apple site to have a backup drive AT LEAST the size of your internal drive. What Gives?

Without seeing specifically what's going on here's some speculation:

    • Do you have another external hard drive with data that is also being backed up? If so, you need to exclude it or get a much larger Time Machine drive.
    • Although Apple recommends a Time Machine about the same size as your internal HDD, many people with experience go with 1.5X-2X larger Time Machines. It allows you to save more months (or years) of backups.
    • You have a lot of data on your internal hard drive. And if you make a lot of changes to files (like move iTunes songs or something), it then has to make a larger backup, and it may not be able to delete enough from the Time Machine to back up.

Your Time Machine disk is just way too small.

as I understand timemachine then it will require more and more space as times goes by because

one can restore back to last backup or the one before that or...

first it make a full backup and then it makes changes differental backups with changes from then on

so when i had the same problem with my external 1TB hd I deleted the ext hd and started timemachine from scratch then I can't restore older deleted files or changes to files but

it mean I can backup again
