OS X does not need it.
No antivirus is needed on Macs and Mac OS X.
Antivirus software on Macs causes more detrimental performance issues that it solves.

Year, screen size, CPU speed and amount of RAM memory installed?
How full is your hard drive?
Is your iMac's desktop full of icons?
Do you have any other "crapware" installed like hard drive "cleaning" apps?

Uninstall Norton. It is not neccessary.
You will find that your iMac should return to its former speedy glory.

Feb 24, 2013 4:20 PM in response to zookeepwrby thomas_r.,First, a performance problem on a Mac should not be blamed on malware of any kind. That's almost never the source of the problem. For some fixes for such problems, see my Mac Performance Guide.
As for the Norton, the others are right that that is not likely to be helping the situation, but is probably making it worse. You should uninstall it right away. Then, go read my Mac Malware Guide to learn how to protect yourself from malware.
