It doesn't add to the number of photos, it just creates another index (a bit like a smart album) based on face recognition. I don't think you can disable it, but you can certainly ignore it.

No It is not possible to disable Faces in iPhoto. It should not be any major bulk to your library if it is then something is wrong.
Once it finishes its initial indexing of faces it is fairly easy to ignore. If you want to let Apple know you do not like the way this works submit feedback.

That is incorrect, HD. Faces does create a small image for each face, though as Frank says, they are all pretty small.

I stand corrected - thinking a bit more carefully, there will of course be thumbnail images, and there's a separate database too.
