Shouldn't have mentioned working right now, I'll give it up. Same bug again, AirPlay simply stops.
Last try: Hello Apple! Your customers have no problem spending a **** of a lot of money for your products. Why doesn't anybody from Apple itself care of any problem? I've got 2 Apple TVs, 3 AirPort Express and an AirPort Extreme and I'm starting to question myself why...
This is a shame, no, this is simply the worst customer support I ever met in 15 years of IT business. Tragic.

All my fears fulfilled by this new version of this horrendous iTunes. I tried just now to sync my iPhone, and sure enough -- iTunes froze up solid when it started copying new files. All the hours -- no, days -- I spent getting the previous version to stop doing this will have to be re-invested in this new piece of garbage from Apple. I agree with a recent review of iTunes in a tech magazine, with the headline, "It's time to take iTunes out the back and shoot it". This is one awful piece of software -- by far the worst I've encountered in 20+ years working with computers. Give me back my Radio Shack TRS-80!

Here's my update.
I've been trial and error with 2.4Ghz Channel wireless option and 5Ghz Channel (automatic)
Channel 9 so far is the best. It has intermitten drops-out 1 sec.
Channel 11-13 is the worst.
Without knowing what this wireless options means, trial and error is the best I can do.
Perhaps this is something that need to works in synch between AirPort and the receiver. In my case is Pioneer X-SMC3. Unfortunatelly I could not find wireless documentation on Pioneer X-SMC3.
Now I am playing with channel 1-8

The people that have stayed on topic on this thread (AirPlay music streaming stops between songs/iTunes seemingly keeps playing) have been helpful to me. Thanks. For my setup, (iTunes (11.0.2) on WinXP; all wired network; 3 airport extreme base stations running 7.6.1 firmware plus an ATV2 running latest firmware -- music on an external drive connected via USB to one of the airports) -- enabling cross-fade in iTunes has thus far solved the problem on music stopping between songs when playing to multiple speakers. But I literally just tried this in the last 30 minutes - but it immediately fixed the issue for me. But I'll also be updating my airports firmware to the latest cheers to El Chode for pointing out to me the new update.
For people having intermittent dropouts... look at the thread title. This was a much more specific problem then that. If you are having random, intermittent, dropouts it's an issue with your network. This means doing stuff like changing your wifi channel (if you are wireless) and other network voodoo may help you - but your problems have literally nothing to do with this thread. I do IT for home users, and to be fair almost every end user having intermittent airplay drops it's a networking problem solved by going wired or upgrading bandwidth (or repeating the signal or moving wireless equipment to a better location) - it's not Apple or the product's fault.

Just for the records - the thread name is "AirPlay music streaming stops between songs" which describes exactly what happens at my place.
I've been into IT as well for quite a while. My personal set-up is a double redundant direct line to DE-CIX, ALP-IX and Level(3) via fully redundant Cisco ASAs and at the endpoint one 1800 series Cisco at my flat. Up to here I can absolutely assure no network problems exist and the line is monitored 24/7. To the 1800 I connect the Apple AirPort Extreme and behind that it's only Apple devices which do not allow any diagnostics at all (in fact 2x AirPort Express, 1x ATV2, MacAir, MacPro, iPhone and 2x iPad).
Everything worked fine until an Apple update a few months ago. Besides same thing happend in our office and at another colleague of mine, at home. At the same time. And at the same time people begun to flood thisi thread again for some obscure reason.
Therefore, for sure, it is an Apple issue. At least I'd say...

I was just streaming a playlist from iTunes on my Mac mini to Apple TV and it was working great for almost 2 hrs. I was thinking, "great!" Then, in between songs, it stopped streaming to my Apple TV but kept playing on the computer. I had to go to the computer, deselect Apple TV in the airplay menu on iTunes, then reclick it to begin streaming again. This is an iTunes computer issue only. I have no problem streaming from the iPhone or iPad to Apple TV. The dropouts happen only when I am streaming from the computer to Apple TV or remote Airport Express speakers. This has been going on for a couple of years now.
I'm not a computer expert, so don't always understand the advice given, but this really shouldn't be happening. If it streams ok from the mobile devices, why can't it stream flawlessly from my Mac?

And it just happened again, in between songs, about 20 minutes after the last time it happened. Why doesn't Apple fix this?
I'm thinking if its not fixed by winter, I'm going to go to Best Buy and look for some non-Apple alternative. I'm tired of this.

SONOS (works using UDP same as AirPlay!): same network, no problem at all
But... using my MacBook Air or colleagues MacBook Pro simply everything goes wrong.
Thus: I stick to my opinion. It is an Apple iTunes issue, for sure. Having made these above thoughts I will act as an iTunes now and drop out of this conversation until someone from Apple itself feels responsible. Otherwise I'd assume this is completely useless.

Does Sonos work from iTunes? I mean, how would I stream my playlists around the house?
When AirPlay from iTunes works, it's great, but these dropouts happen so often, they are an embarrassment at parties.
I'm considering switching to Sonos.

It really makes me nervous: Before the last update to Itunes everything was finally fine (except saltuary drops)....now each song played with iTunes from my iMac will stop at the end (but even in the middle).
In this way the music fades randomly...the song continues to play (you see the player going on...but no music is heard)....astonishing me with this trouble!!
Apple SHOULD give an answer to this trouble!

Same issue here.
Mac Mini running OSX 10.7.5
iTunes library running on a Synology NAS, mounted to desktop
All Apple AEX are updated as of a few weeks ago to firmware 7.6.3
Everything works GREAT, including Sonos running on multiple speakers pulling from same library on same NAS, with no dropouts. I know this is not a network issue, as all WAP's are connected through ethernet, no wireless extenders, or anything like that.
Trying to stream music from the mini to a remote AEX with a onkyo hooked up, via either optical or analog cables, and I have switched to different inputs (CD, AUX1, etc) so all other variables are isolated.
Playing back songs, EVERY song transition, the song ends, and the new song keeps playing in iTunes, bt the streaming stops, so the new song cannot be heard. iTunes still says it is streaming, the remote speaker is active when you look on the control window, and even the Apple Remote App registers the song as playing, but no sound. If you skip to next song, 100% of the time the streaming picks up again.
THIS IS AN APPLE KILLER. I have been a loyal evangelist, for going on 20 years, but I gotta say, APPLE pull your head out of your @33! Your whole growth over the next 5 years is going to depend on you out-integrating your competitors for all of us who don't want to spend our free time, FIDDLING WITH SETTINGS. I bought a sonos, plugged it in, and IT WORKED. It used to be like this with Aple, but now it seems that they are as likely to break things as improve them with their updates.

Well said, chefmiguelito! You show clearly that this is a bug in iTunes and that Apple is just irresponsible about it, as it is with this whole product.
Because each update of iTunes seems to bring with it a new issue that has to be FIDDLED AND FIDDLED, even if Apple did address this problem, I now find it too risky to update. Who knows what new, even worse, issue I might face?
