The case, as already said, is that the retails have different warranty standards. If you insist on thinking that I'm lying, it's best not to opine. There are many people here who tells the same stories, which is disappointing for a brand like Apple. The service is not the same for everyone.
Frizzera here my professional opinion on this :
1. Accidental damage is not covered by warranty
2. A device that has accidental damage can be replaced by apple for a out-of-warranty price
3. Nobody gets from apple a replacement for a self inflicted damage ( only in insurance casses but that is very complicated and expensive to have such an inssurance which i guess you don't have [ third party inssurance company that has special contracts with their customers] )
4. The only display damage that is covered by warranty is the single hairline crack which can happen because of drastic temperature changes or faulty material . Single hairline crack ( with no pressure lines or deviations form the line , that might show a pressure point ) are being handeled by apple like warranty case **that means the device needs to be in the 1 year limited warranty** .
