Is it registered in iCloud's Find My, and was Find My setup on the MBP before it was lost? If so you might be able to see where it is by logging into iCloud, and click Find My and choose the MBP. If it is off, or not connected to the internet, or not setup in Find My, then there is no way to track it or find it.

Yes there are ways.
If find my Mac is on and active in iCloud.
Third party free tracking software if active, like Prey.
Through various IP logging services like FaceBook, Dropbox etc.
Certainly report it to police.
