I'm having trouble with sound on my ipad (1st gen).  It's not the mute button, side switch, or settings.  It will play music, but no sound on other apps, no keyboard sounds, or lock switch sounds.  I've turned it all the way off and reprogrammed it--in the middle of reprogramming the sounds started again briefly, but are now silent again.  Any tips?

I don't know what re programming the iPad means but you do have system sounds muted. If you have sound in the music app or in Safari videos, but no sounds for notifications, keyboard clicks and in other apps - that is a classic sign that system sounds have been muted. It doesn't necessarily have to be something intentional that you did - a crash may have caused to or updating the device may have triggered it.

If you are sure that it is not the fact that system sounds are muted, have you tried resetting all settings? Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings. If you do this, you will have to enter all device settings again.

    Just in case ......

If you lose sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.

System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.

Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.

If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.

If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.

If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.

This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

Yes, it was resetting, not reprogramming.  I did reset all the settings--and during that process I did have key sounds and the lock screen sound, but now that's gone again.  It's not the side switch--that's set to rotation.  I've checked the task bar too and that's all the way up.  Still no sound.  I know the speaker isn't broken, just can't figure this one out.  Thank you!

Can you see the volume slider in the recents tray when you double tap the home button and swipe to the right? The bar next to the Music App icon. ..... Does that appear and if it does, is the slider adjustment button showing as well?

Yes, it shows and it's all the way up.

I apologize if this is something that you already tried, but I want to rule out all of the easy fixes first. Did you reset/reboot this way?

Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

If you did that and it did not work, do you have a recent backup from which you could restore the iPad? Recent but one that predates this problem with the sound? If you have a backup that is recent and predates this issue, you can try restoring from that backup as well.

    Sadly, I've tried that too--still no change . . .

I'm out of ideas except to try restoring the iOS software now. Read this before you attempt anything and see if it is something that you want to try now.
