Don't know. Maybe the plugins, though not likely. They may have render problems, bad frames and such, but the app shouldn't be crashing. Just the app or is it a whole compiuter freeze?

Both. The app sometimes quits while I'm viewing video on the import window. (I'm importing from a tape camera). When the app freezes and I'm unable to do anything at all. No cursor, just the spinning ball. I can't select anything to do a force quit or whatever. So I force shutdown the computer by turning it off.
The background rendering that caused the freeze/lockup was with several clips I had dropped into the project. But it's also done this while rendering transitions. Can't say for sure if they were plugin transitions.

check your installed fonts! Applications > Font Book > File > Validate Fonts. (You'd be surprised how easy it is to end up with a corrupt font... even one you've been using on a regular basis for years.) Also Check for Duplicates (two of the same font installed at the same time is really not good in Mac OS... never has been.)
Almost nothing kills a mac app faster than a bad font. Just scanning down the Font menu over a bad font will evaporate FCPX (and Motion.) ]
Oh... for the background rendering thing: check to make sure none of the clips you add to the storyline has those "tell tale" green (or just empty - they'll appear black) frames at the beginning or end. "Dead" frames will get the renderer really good and stuck. The solution immediately is to turn off background rendering, check all your clips and trim those bad areas out. Then you can turn bg rendering back on. If you use "third party" stock footage, quite frequently those dead frames end up on the front and back ends of the clips you get.
... not sayin' these two issues will fix your woes -- just be aware they can be part of your problems. (PS - they would account for your iMovie instability issues as well... [Core OS issues])

Just to follow up on this issue. Since I've removed the corrupted fonts and duplicate fonts, I've not had one quit or freeze-up. (knock on wood) Amazing that over the years I've never heard of the corrupted font fix. Who knew! Thanks to fox_m for pointing this out. Great advise for anyone having quit/freeze-up issues with apps.
See fox_m's advise above on corrupt fonts.
