Q: Deeply Disturbed by Do Not Disturb not Working

I have tried every configuration of Do Not Disturb, and calls are still coming through when I'm in the half moon status. I've set my notifications to "No One." What gives??

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.1.1

DND only works when the phone is locked/asleep.

Thank you, paulcb. This works! ...Why they don't have this as an instruction when you set the notifications for DND is beyond me -- seems to be a very important detail. Thanks for your answer.

So those of us who set our phones on a nightstand with a clock running can't use DND?

That's right. If you don't let the phone go into Standby, then DND will allow all notifications/calls through. If the phone is not in standby, it's in use. If it's in use, you're available. That's the way it works.

The iPhone has a perfectly good alarm clock built in that does not require the phone to be 'awake' for it to sound.

Sure, I understand that it has a built-in alarm that can go off while the phone is locked, but that's a little different.  I use the phone as a nightstand clock that is always visible so if I wake up in the night, I can see what time it is.  I'm guessing this is a pretty common use case, given the number of clock apps available today, all with dimming features for nighttime hours.  I'm surprised this wasn't thought of when they designed this feature.

I use my iPhone at night with an "Ambient Noise" app, which keeps the phone "awake". I am guessing this is why I am getting notifications even thoughI have Do Not Disturb on? Even though I usually put it on silent, the constant buzzing, especially crack of dawn emails is waking me up.  I could swear this was not happening when Do Not Disturb originally came out.I even bought a new clock radio so I could use my iPhone for this app.  I hope they do something to fix this so we can turn this on even when our phone is working!

I have the opposite problem.  I have DND turned on and I have it set to "Favorites" so that if someone on that list calls me or sends me a text message, I will get a notification.  I believe the calls come through fine but I do not receive a notification of a text from people in my "Favorites".  Any suggestions?

With Do Not Disturb on, you will not get any text notifications. With your calls set to Favorites, you will receive phone calls, but that is all. Do Not Disturb will block all other notifications like mail, text, etc.. Only the alarm will get through.
