I should add that what I am trying to do is make adjustments to the drop shadow blur, distance, etc., and it is only affecting a couple of the words, even though I have all of the text selected.

Is your OS really 10.5.3? Motion requires 10.6.7 or later. I can not replicate your issue. If you select the text object then the drop shaddow applies to the entire object. If you select letters or words it only applies to them.

Trashing preferences is usually a good first step when motion does something weird. If that doesn't help I would check for font corruption. Use font book to check for duplicates and corrupted fonts. If still no joy try a new user. I am assuming you alreaady tried different fonts and the problem persists across different fonts. I would also use disk utility and repair permissions on your boot drive. Hope one of these solutions works for you as reinstalling motion is about all that's left. Good luck!

Thanks Jim. I think checking the fonts is good idea, while I have had the problem across fonts, I've noticed some funny things in FontBook lately, so there may be something there. Will also try repairing permissions.
