So, I made a few bonehead errors. I'm moving away from iPhoto and putting my library into Lightroom. I made a few erros by 1 not copying a few months of pictures I instead moved them (error number 1), then secondly when I deleted photos from Lightroom that didn't import to correct folder I deleted them (not realizing I had "add" rather than copy on. So when I deleted them from trash there were gone... permenantly. So, thankfully I've run into the Previews fold which seems ot have the same photos which I now ask... what is the difference? What will I be missing? I'd say at this point just having the photos at all will be a huge plus, then quality. None of the photos have been edited since import so are they in a sense "orginals"?

with iPhoto '11 the originals folder has alaises pointing to the original photos in the masters folder

The masters folder has an exact copy of the original photo

the preview folder has a JPEG of the current version of the original folder and depending on the situation may be the same as the original or different (for a RAW original it is the processed JPEG - for an edited photo it is the edited version

    What's missing? Quality and metadata.

So LarryHN, where is the "original folder"? Or are you just talking in general? Most of the photos, if not all, are from our (wife & I) iPhones, so aren't iPhones already taking JPEGS? Terence, with it being from iPhones, there isn't that much quality missing would there? It looks like some/most of the preview photos are larger by like 2kb. All the metadata also seems to be there. Device, exposure, shutter speed, etc... I guess I might be dumbluck lucky.

Obvipously I was speaking in general since you gave no speifics - dependign on spcifics you may not have an originals folder - if you do and if you have iPhoto '11 then it contains alaises and the masters folder contains the photos

Thanks Larry, your first question really answered my questions as to the diff btwn the masters and previews and since I haven't touched the masters... previews are the same thing and since they were taken on iPhones, the masters are jpegs anyways.. just happy to have saved my butt. This hopefully be my 1 hiccup in centralizing and backing up my library away from iPhoto. I just don't like the way it organizes things and operates.
