I'm having performance problems with Aperture in particular  moving from one photo to another takes a l-o-n-g time.  Could it be that my library is just too big?  Its 70GB.

A 70 GB library is not a problem for Aperture. I am currently running with a library that is 235 GB.

    How about more information on your Mac;

    what Mac are you using?

is the linrary on your system drive?

how much free space do you have on your system drive/

what version of Aperure is your Mac running?

what version of OS X is your Mac running?

Doubling your RAM if possible will make a night and day difference in the performance of your machine.

Your problem is not library size, but limited RAM. Increase your RAM to, say, 8 GB and all will be well.

    Turn off faces.

    Clear cache folders:

              Hard Drive/Library/Caches

              Hard Drive/System/Library/Caches

              Hard Drive/Users/(Your user)/Library/Caches

This really sped up my Aperture!

Thank you now that I see the numbers on your RAM usage, I must concur with those who are saying that you do not have enough RAM. You need to increase it so get better performance.

Just got a 27 inch iMac with fusion drive.

The performance on my older iMac 27 without fusion was slow.

Aperture flies with the fusion drive.

    As does fcpx

moving from one photo to another takes a l-o-n-g time

4GB of RAM in combination with using Mt. Lion and large raw files surely will slow down things a bit, but the numbers you posted are not too bad - not sufficient to explain " a l-o-n-g time", unless you are very impatient

So I'd suggest, to make sure your Aperture library does not have any corruption. You said, that you routinely do repair the library, but but did you rebuild it lately? Have you tested, if you see the same lagging behaviour, if you use a different Aperture library (a new test library with ome test images, created especially for testing)? What does Aperture's Activity Window show, when you have this performance problems  (Window > Show Activity)?

When did you first notice these performance problems? All of a sudden after some installation or upgrading? Or after importing new images?

How did you create your Aperture library? Is it in old iPhoto library, or did you import an iPhoto Library?

    Regards

    Léonie
