AppleCare is going to continue to be clueless until enough people report the problem. All major problems start where AppleCare is clueless until enough people report the problem.

I am also having this problem where the fan randomly spikes to close to 6000rpm when temp readings haven't increased. It happens a couple times each time I use my laptop and usually when I'm not doing anything heavy, just safari and word processing. I didn't have this issue with my rmbp 13 inch before I exchanged it for this 15inch...or my old airs. Took it to the apple store and they ran diagnostics and said everything checked out... !!! What can be causing this when I'm running the same software I did on the other macs... Is this really normal?? If so, I might be returning this to get the 13 inch back. :(

I have been watching quite a few of these posts for some time now as I am having the exact same experience as described by many of you.

Sorry for the long post but I have now had this:

Not with ONE or TWO but now FOUR!

Fans will kick in full regardless of CPU load/temp or workload on system. It will then come down gradually over a 1-2 min period but occasionally will not go back to normal it will then go back up through another cycle.

    Outline:

AHT – Apple Hardware Test (Hold D while powering on to grey screen)

SMC was performed on all faulty machines. Also it was always a fresh install with only default OS X programmes and not a time machine backup as myself and apple store guys thought this could be causing the problem.

1st 2012 rMBP: 2.3GHz/8GB/256GB – Had a dent in the lid when unboxed so exchanged immediately

2nd 2012 rMBP: 2.3GHz/8GB/256GB – Faultless for 13 days but decided to exchange for 2013 refresh

1st 2013 rMBP: 2.4GHz/8GB/256GB – Fan issues, AHT no problems to report

2nd 2013 rMBP: 2.4GHz/8GB/256GB – Fan issues, AHT no problems to report

3rd 2013 rMBP: 2.4GHz/8GB/256GB – Fan issues, creaky body, flex on bottom cover, low backlight brightness, AHT no problems

    4th 2013 rMBP: 2.4GHz/8GB/256GB – Fan issues, AHT Fault 4HDD/11/40000000: SATA(0,0)

    Detail:

I used the 2012 rMBP for 13 days no problem at all. I loved the machine so much and it was a pleasure to use every moment. I never ever noticed the fans at all and it was never a worry to me. My friend too still has a 2012 rMBP that is faultless. I was within my 14 days and after a week of thinking I decided to swap it for a refresh.

I now really wish I never did this!

All 4 of the 2013 rMBP have been plagued with the same fan issue. Some have been worse than others most notably the 1st and 3rd ones kicked in on a far more regular basis. It is always random but after some time I have found a way to always reproduce the problem. When I pull across a large amount of files from my NAS to my macbook at some point it WILL activate the fans even though all temps are fine (30-55°C) and CPU load is between 8-11%

e.g. (I did the same thing even on 2012 rMBP as I always shift at least my music onto my laptop)

[Copy my music folder from my NAS (34GB) to the anywhere on my macbook pro. At multiple points (not always the same) it will activate the fans at full and then slowly ramp down. I have done this on cold boots and also with me holding the macbook in the air with one hand by fingertips only.]

This is not the only time it happens. It will happen at any time randomly even idle with the backlight for display gone to sleep. All of them would get super cool on the underside and could actually cool down my lap easily.

With my test I have to suspect it is something to do around the SSD and with the 4th one clearly reporting a HDD fault is there something going on with the SSD or temp probe near SSD or the logic board altogether? I don’t know and there is only so much diagnosis I can do on my end plus it isn’t my job I did pay a premium for this machine to just work. Unlike all my other desktops which I have self built.

Every time I visited the store they were very supportive and wanted to come to a “resolution” whatever it is. By the 3rd visit they were questioning me but a video of the problem I captured on my phone soon put that to rest. On the 4th visit I got again the “this must be a feature of the new macbooks if it’s on all of them” line but then showed him the error from the AHT and the manager immediately changed his tune and admitted that there was defiantly a fault with this particular one as there was a fault message but was still unsure about the other ones. They understood that if the 2012 model functioned without doing this then it would be peculiar for it to be a “feature” in the 2013 model.

They asked if I would want another exchange (which was nice) but I explained that if I were to go for another and the issue does arise at what point will you guys say “no enough is enough we will not exchange anymore and that’s the way they are”. He assured me that they would carry on until they find one I am as equally satisfied with as I was with my 2012 model as he could see I was thrilled with that one and would have never traded it if there weren’t a refresh.

As nice as it was for them to offer this I declined and asked for my money to be put on a gift card because I will defiantly be purchasing one as it was a superb machine however I will not be a guinea pig for a new product having to travel continuously backwards and forwards only to be always disappointed when I get another fresh faulty machine. I have also tried another apple store in case it was just this one but that was machine number 3.

Either way I will go back and purchase one when it feels like apple have got their act together.

I have a brand new MacBook Pro and am suffering with the same issue. I have a 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 with a 512 GB SSD. This the first Mac I have purchased and it is not what I expected.

Arghhh fan noise again.... hmmmm it did not help...

Im planning on buying the new 15"rMBP this Friday. I sold my 2012 rMBP, but after reading the thread, I may just hold the idea till they get a solution. The 2012 model didnt have have fan issues for me, maybe its because I relly didnt check. I ran FCPX and oftem maxed the fan speeds. It once froze while I was trashing files from my external drive. I suspect it was because the format was NTFS.

I have just got a 2013 version and this by far the worst my others which were both 2012 only made the fan noise randomly.  This 2013 version puts the fans on full blast even when copying files to the desktop.  This is just by far a disgrace on Apples part.  I am now stuck as I don't want to return another one but feel Apple is leaving me no choice.

Has anyone else had any luck getting any comment from Apple?

I have the feeling that the fans won't spikes up from a fresh boot. It's only when your Macbook is going on sleep mode and wake on that it will later have the issue with the fans.

Could make sense because the SMC manage also the sleep mode.

Could you do some tests? Means never put your MBP on sleep mode and tell me if you will still have the issue?
