Ok, I've now sent another question to Green Valley:

'A lot of poeple over in the Macbook Pro forum are using those adapter to run multiple FW devices like sound recording gear and have been doing so since the Retina MBPs came out and Apple finally released the TB>FW adapter. There only complaint was it didn't put out enough power for some of there devices so they has to resort to using an AC adapter also.

You mention using your system with a Belkin firewire. But the new iMac has only a Thunderbolt connection and has no firewire port. Has Green Valley actually done a test to confirm that the ADVC-110 doesn't work with the Apple Thunderbolt to firewire? If you could please give me a definitive answer to this question as I would either like to proceed with the purchase of one of your systems or look for an alternative. Apple have advised that the Thunderbolt to firewire should work??

Thank you 'Shootist007". I have added your pertinent statement in my mail to Green Valley.

Will post reply as soon as received.

PS. crh24: I have only a imac having left 'Windows'.

Me, too, four years ago.  That's why I made sure there was viable Mac software for the HDPVR before I purchased it.

It will be interesting to see if you can get past the 'canned' responses most tech support gives via email.

Okay, now I have received the reply from Green Valley after several reminders to prompt them for a reply:

' The Thunderbolt connection is not officially supported with our products, the ADVC-110 was designed for use with Firewire (400) and can work with Firewire (800). the Thunderbolt connection can damage the unit for it was not built to be used with that type of connection and we would not be able to provide support. We recommend using it with a Mac or PC that is equipped with Firewire inputs.'

    So what are my alternatives?

Is there another system tried and tested that will work and have the manufcturers support?

Really that is a Boiler Plate Response. Of course their product does not support Thunderbolt. It never did and never will. But you are not connecting it to a Thunderbolt port. You are connecting it to a Firewire port at the END of a FW to TB Adapter. That adapter changes the TB port to work with Firewire Devices which is what that product is.

I really don't see what your problem is.

That is like asking you ISP if you can connect there modem/router combo box to a Thunderbolt port. They would say No you can't. But if you use a TB to Ethernet adapter the modem/router never sees the TB port. All it sees is the Ethernet port at the end of the Ethernet to TB Adapter.

Your options are to Trust Apple for making a TB to FW adapter that work with FW Devices and to discount what the maker is saying as they can't get by any mention of a Thunderbolt port whether you also stated wou would be using a TB to FW adapter or not. Once they see Thunderbolt that's it, they respond with a Boiler Plate answer "Are Device work with Firewire".

I agree with Shootist. If it was me I would connect it and see what happens - it's not going to blow up!

Okay, I will go ahead and purchase, and will of course be back to the discussion with the results.

Meanwhile, I thank you and value your advices at each stage of this discussion.

Shootist007 is correct.  It's an adapter, not a "cable" as in just wire with plugs.  There is active circuitry inside the plugs on both ends.

What! You didn't see the smiley?

If I hold out the adapter and ask my wife what it is she will say short 'cable'.  The word 'adapter' will likely never enter her mind. The same goes for 90% of the people I know. To them it's just a short cable, or even wire, with funny looking connectors. If I correct them they nod OK, smile, and turn to their neighbor and roll their eyes.

I'm an analytical who, after living for decades with an empathic spouse has learned which nits to pick and which to leave alone.  This 'adapter'—'cable' situation is one of them.

It is interesting to note that Apple has all of their Thunderbolt adapters under the Cables section of their accessories, isn't it?
