Interesting that you mention iPhoto.  I imported my old iPhoto library into an existing Aperture library a little while ago and looking back the performance problems may well have dated from then.  There are also some issues with the structure of the imported iPhoto library.  One project was missing; the photos were still there and I recreated the project.  Also the photos are organised by project and by event.  So maybe ??????

Is it worth doing a rebuild?

There is one known problem with imported iPhoto libraries (since Aperture 3.3.2) - if your imported iPhoto library contains smart albums and you arrange the projects by date, Aperture may become sluggish, unresponsive, or even crash. See this post by AlexBrown: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19183045?ac_cid=tw123456#19183045

So, if your Aperture library should contain smart albums imported from iPhoto, I'd recommend to delete these albums and recreate them in Aperture.

But in any case, upgrade the RAM, if you can. It will make a large difference.

Before a rebuild make sure your update is current. A rebuild is a more involved operation than a repair.
