I have a refurbished (bought from Apple) Mac Mini Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz with upgraded 8GB of RAM, OS is latest Snow Leopard (10.6.8).  I have had this machine less than one year, and in the past five days it has started to freeze up quite often.

After running Disk Utility and getting a message that said to repair the disk, I hve run Disk Utility from the original disk to fix the problem.  No effect, I still have regular freezes and often.  I have run Disk Utility again several times, and have had to repair Permissions several times, though the Repair Disk says the hard drive is okay.  Only the Permissions keep getting messed up, and this happens quickly.

I have no large number of video files on the desk top.

I checked some threads and ran Activity Monitor and Control.  Control when I ran "disk0" did not show any problem.  I do not know how to interpret the Activity Monitor readings.

Short of wiping the computer and reinstalling everything, is there a way to determine what is wrong with the computer?

Thanks for any help!

    Hello,

Only the Permissions keep getting messed up,

You can ignore repeated Permission fixes if the last line says completed in it.

See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?

How much RAM you have for real & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.

Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive

    Reboot, test again.

If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.

Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

    Hi BDAqua,

    Thanks for the quick reply.

    1. S.M.A.R.T. shows verified.

    2. Activity MOnitor only shows open programs, no unusual amount of RAM being used.

    3. I am not sure how to interpret Console readouts.

    4. I have 8GB or real RAM (I upgraded from 2 to 8 myself).

    5. Free space is approximately 111 GB.

    6. I have already run a Repair from the original OS disk because when I ran Disk Utility four days ago, it said to repair using the orignial OS disk.  Since then, if I run Disk Utility, it confirms the disk is okay.,

    7. I have been using a Logitech Marble Mouse, but have been for the past year.  Only in the last few days has it caused any problems.  I checked a thread here, it said to delete the plist, which I did. I then went to Logitech and downloaded the driver again and installed it.  Everything I have used on the mini has been fine up until the past few days.

    8. I was not sure what you meant when you said to check:

Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

    /private/var/run/StartupItems

    /Library/StartupItems

    /System/Library/StartupItems

    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons

    /Library/LaunchDaemons

I looked in these fodlers, some were empty, others had some files in them.  What should I be chekcing for specifically?

The more I use the computer, the more it freezes, and the more frequently is freezes.  It is getting to the point where simple tasks result in a complete freeze.  For example, when I try to convert a Pages file to PDF, the poor mini freezes.

Do you think it is a harward problem?

Will I have to do a complete wipe of the HD and reinstall of everythng?

    Thanks!

    A couple of more bits.

    1. In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, there are NOT a lot of Pageouts.

    2. Some tasks really make the mini flip out.  E.g., When I hit the File menu.
