And to create Lion/ML - those installer .ESD packages will (could not believe this, and no warning either) self-destruct during the install and have to be redownloaded etc.

Mid 2010 mac pros need the minimum of 10.6.4 to reinstall the OS, this, as far as I can tell, is not available from retail outlets.
I brought my Mac back to life by cloning my other 2006 Mac Pro with Carbon Copy Cloner ( a great bit of software), which I upgraded to 10.6.8 using the 10.6.3 installation DVD I mistakenly bought, I took my HD from my broken down mac and inserted into my 2006 mac and cloned directly to the drive, removed it, inserted it into my mid 2010 mac pro and 'voila'...back up and running
