    Chrome installed.

Maybe this problem only happens to very few safari users. And even if there are many it seems not yet important enougth for apple to fix it.

I moved to chrome months ago and it's as good as safari + it works on linux very well. Apple have to fix the bug and release a KILLER feature for me to move back again...

I spoke to an AppleCare rep yesterday and after we did a screen share, the rep noticed the issue and has submitted it to their engineering department. I was told to expect an update next week.

As for Chrome, it's very fast and fluid; however, it lacks a few things I deem essential:

    a) Reader -- For the purposes of my work, and my personal reading habits, this is an invaluable part of my web browsing experience that Chrome has not been able to replace. Firefox does have a 3rd party plugin that mimicks this behavior but it's not as dynamic as the one in Safari.

    b) Battery life on my MBP. My laptop does indeed get 'hotter' when running Chrome. This is anecdotal at best but there appears to be a propensity for engaging the discrete GPU (presumeably for rendering) than relying on the integrated GPU. I did not have this experience with Firefox, only with Chrome. Running Safari, my fans rarely if ever kick or does the laptop get warm.

    c) Reading List. I use this pretty religiously, it syncs nicely with my iPad and iPhone.

To each their own but I love Safari, and to a lesser extent Firefox.

Side note: The purpose of this thread is "Safari," not Chrome--if you're happy with Chrome, awesome--however, if you're here just to troll, then you should visit Google Chrome Forum - Google Product Forums

Well, I'm in the same boat and have been for the past several weeks.

Mac Mini late 2012 16GB RAM etc ... Safari 6.0.2 with extensions AdBlock, Reloadbutton and Click to Flash.

The extensions were installed to try to curb the rampant memory use by WebProcess & Safari.

I am seeing the same errors as other people have. Whenever I google search something and then for instance right click on open in new tab on the google images link, which appears a few lines down;  or I right click on the first listed result ... I can expect Safari to crash / disappear as if I chose to close it.

I've been keeping console open, and really don't get anything that explains the issue to me; but I have been shocked by the number of errors and complaints in it.

    Feb 23 09:35:30 icecore.local Safari[542]: CGContextClipToRect: invalid context 0x0

Feb 23 09:35:47 icecore.local Safari[542]: Received an invalid message from the web process with message ID 323002f

The above two is what makes it crash.

For the rest I see a whole bunch of stuff like:

It is comforting to know I'm not the only one with this issue, but saddening to see reports of this issue going back more than a year. Ouch.

I`ve been suffering from this since the launch of ML. The problem starts here - Received an invalid message from the web process with message ID 323002f or ID 323002e. Its all about iCloud, go to preferences - iCloud and uncheck Safari. Helped for me.

    Thanks for the tip.

I'll try the icloud preferences and see what happens.  If I get another phantom crash I'll report back, if not, it's working.

  • icerabbit Level 3 Level 3 (765 points)

In my case, I don't use iCloud as the internet and cellular are too slow.

I did reset Safari today and Safari hasn't done its vanishing act yet. Knock on wood that will hold me over for a while.

  • PHX32 Calculating status...

I have the same problem since Mountain Lion.

Safarai quits out of no where when I open a new tab or reader. It's happened with many different websites.

I have Adblock and Clicktoflash extensions, I've unistalled them, reset Safari, deleted log files... the problem is still there. It's really annoying because it's my favorite browser. Hopefully this will be fixed soon.

Go to system preferences on you Mac, then choose iCloud and uncheck Safari there. Safari crashes when receive some broken info from server, regardless you using iCloud or not, if it is enabled in your preferences it will crash randomly here and there. Try it.

  • PHX32 Level 1 Level 1 (20 points)

I use iCloud tabs between my iPhone and MacBook, I don't want to uncheck Safari from iCloud, it's a great feature.

  • Kremliovskyi Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Its very useful feature and I used it a lot in the past, but unfortunately this crashes made me refuse it for the sake of stable browser. I really hope Apple will manage this problem in the next update to Safari, though it already lasts for too long. This bug is hard to reproduce and therefore it will last some more time.

  • Mizx Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

It crashes with unchecked Safari in iCloud, so that's not a soulution. Problem is somewhere else.

  • John P. Level 4 Level 4 (1,145 points)

    Update.

Well in my haste to solve this problem, I did the inevitable: a full, fresh, start from scratch reinstall of Mountain Lion 10.8.2 on a freshly formatted hard drive.

No changes, I still get this error every once in a while.

I am still in touch with AppleCare regarding this issue, and it has been submitted to their engineering department for clarification. However, I have received no news since last week so I imagine they either know about it and there's a fix coming, we're still researching it.

    In the meantime...

Question: Has anyone noticed this problem on a Mac with only one GPU (not two)?

  • Javier Bonafont Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Okay, well, the iCloud Safari fix didnt work.

just had the phantom crash happen again.

So, still waiting for any help.  Meh.

  • Jason Barker Level 1 Level 1 (15 points)

    John,

Yes. I have this exact problem on 10.7.5 on an iMac with one GPU. (late 2009, 27")

It appears that none of the fixes noted on the board has worked for everyone. It is infrequent enough for me, that it is not a show-stopper. I have not bailed to Chrome yet.

Note, again, this is not exclusive to Mountain Lion. Perhaps it is associated with an update to Safari that for some coincides with upgrading to ML?

I appreciate others talking to Apple on the phone about this. Hopefully, that raises the profile of the bug.

    thanks
