Having the same problem in the UK so I hope lots of people see your post and respond. The more people who comment or boycott iTunes the better. It's about time Apple learned to listen to their customers instead of saying there isn't a problem or the problem is the customer's fault! My last email from them suggested that the fault lay with my computer to which I responded "the problem still comes back to you - its a Mac!!!!"

Never did find an answer to my original question, but I did find an article that helped me downgrade iTunes 11 to iTunes 10 in Mac OS X (personally don't like iTunes 11).
Still have the same headaches regarding the iTunes store though.
The immediate solution being not to buy from iTunes - spend my money elsewhere.

Changed back to iTunes 10 and in my account settings I turned settings/recommendations to Off.
I still get the unknown error (-1202) intermittently, but the iTunes store seems to be loading correctly now.
No idea if this is a fix yet. Time will tell...

Nevermind - it reverted to loading incorrectly and same old error messages.

Update: Now it's just a white screen - the iTunes store *****.
