"Other" data (iPhone) - How do I remove this junk?

Didn't do anything for me other than remove all my music. There were only 6 albums on there anyways so I don't really care but it didn't do anything to the size of other. This is my third iPhone and everyone of them has done this. I could restore but it will just do it again. The fact that other got larger when I deleted what music I had makes me think this isn't the result of rogue processes writing too much data (which I spent hours inspecting the file system trying to find) but a bug in the way the OS marks space available or calculates the available space. So if you are constantly swapping the music contents of your iPhone and that method doesn't accurately mark that free space as available but the swipe->delete method does, you would get your free space back. But if you don't ever put music on your iPhone like me, there are still other buckets dumping into other.

Just a theory though. I really have no clue what the root cause of this is.

Although it frees up memory, what you'll soon find is that process screws up music playback -- songs that skip and/or have the wrong artwork.  You'll see, as has everyone who's tried this (myself included).

    Yep.  You're right.

The music doesn't match the album covers and occasionally there's a song out of order.  Just as you'd predicted.  For the moment, however, my phone seems to run faster, so I'm OK with the errors in the music area, as long as I now have more memory to work with.

I also tried Diskaid to delete or move some of the other "archived" items on my phone.  That seems to have worked too, but it's still too soon to tell.

After reading some of your other comments, I agree that this is something that Apple should not have allowed to happen.  It seems to be a bug that they can (easily?) fix.  Maybe next time.

    Thanks for your help!

I found a free app called iFunBox that at least allowed me to manage a lot of the files that are hidden within "other". Worth a try and its free.

Part of my issue was the backup corruption that a lot of the people here talk about and yet restoring as a new phone and then copying the backup only made a small difference (and took a lot of time). The other problem (on a separate thread) was that the Voice Memos would no longer sync and I could not manage the hundreds and hundreds of VMs I had. iFunBox allowed me to do that.

LOL the conspiracy theorist in me wants to say this whole "other" situation is Apple's way of persuading people to subscribe to iTunes Match, that's what I finally did to get by with my 16GB phone!

On my 16gb iPhone 4S I had 3,45GB in "other". My fix to this was, as stated early in this thread, downloading iExplorer and finding loads of mp3 and m4v files in the 'Recordings' folder (for some reason). Deleted all these and "other" went down to 1,05GB.. Finally!

Will keep an eye on the 'Recordings' folder from now on to see if new stuff piles up in there, at least now I know how to clean it up.

As many people have stated, there are no easy fix as people have different problems, but I recommend downloading iExplorer and snoop around to see if there are some suspicious looking large files and folders. May solve your problem.

Sorry for my english and thanks to the community!

I want to say thank you, I found 1,06 GB of old lecture recordings from 2 years ago in that recordings folder! They were long deleted in Voice Memos, and iTunes/iCloud kept backing them up, and restoring them back onto the phone when I was trying to resolve this issue.

    What worked for me...

I just gt a new iPhone 5. Other was 541 MB.  I synced with iTunes and it shot up to over 1 gig. I started to look at the Apps that were installed on my phone using iTunes. I noticed that there were 5 that iTunes thought were installed (the option to 'Remove App' was there). I had manually deleted these Apps manually from my phone.

I went through the list of Apps one by one and made sure to check the remove App button for all the Apps I did not want on the phone (especially the ones I had manually deleted).

I applied the sync and now my Other is back doown to 541.

As someone said early, I think it is a sync issue. It also appears that Itunes gets confused with what is on the phone if you manually add songs/Apps or delete them without using iTunes.

I did this procedure yesterday, and today when I plug my phone in I am still at 541 MB for Other. Hope this works for some others.

Update from a few pages back, (started out SEVERAL pages back)

Mine; iPhone 5 64GB, iOs6.1, restored to NEW, .9GB of other. 10.5GB music-1288 songs, Photos .28GB-96 pics, Apps, 2.1GB-85 apps, Books .38GB-56 books, grew to 1.3GB in 7 days, now another 7 days since that last sync other has grown to 1.42GB. Could be normal, hoping it doesn’t take over any more than 2-4% of my memory. Those with only 16GB phones this is far more critical.

Now 19 days later, same qty of 96 photos, added only one app, same music content, OTHER has grown to 1.57GB. small growth, but growth none the less. Personally I’m struggling to see 1.57 GIGABYTES of Data to support the apps, pics, music, phone config, etc. 88 APPS that total only a mere 2.1GigaBytes, that is a LOT of code that IS those apps, and the “support” data for those apps is close that at 1.57GB? Granted I have a 64GB phone with 42GB free so I’m not missing the storage, but those with 16gb phones, this would be 10%.

I would be OK with less than 1GB, I’m don’t feel “OTHER” should be any larger, even with a full 64GB of apps, music, pics, videos etc, those pics, apps etc should be storing most of their data within themselves, NOT separately as “support” data or “OTHER”….  I digress…

Enough ranting for now, I’ll update at some later date….

PS, did update to 6.1.2, experiencing the BEST battery life I have EVER experienced since my first iPhone back when the first was released. Thought I’d end on a good note. ;-)

YES! I had 6.68MB of Other. I used the utility you recommended and found over 30 copies of the voice memos. They've GOT to fix that! In the meantime, I've deleted the copies. Makes me want to not use voice memos...except they're so darned handy!

My "Other" data is nearing 8GB!!!!

It continually has grown even though I have reduced the bitrate of my MP3 and eliminated every possible app.  It could be emails, and will attempt to adjust that, but 6-8GB of emails is HIGHLY unlikely.  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

That worked perfectly!!!!! I hate apple sometimes for this sloppy programming. Such a great format but oversights that seem like no-brainer bugs that should be fixed are always left unchecked. hy not just fix them and be done with it?

I've noticed most of my OTHER data was text messages. I had over 50k messages. I was at 2GB other. I got so annoyed I just restored my iPhone to new. My new 5 that is. I'm down to 500MB of other. Sigh.

I'm aware of that. Unfortunately, because this is one more attempt to clarify the issue. In the meantime, I'm sharing as much info as I have. And in some naive way, I'm hoping Apple picks it up and does something with it.

I deleted all of my iMessages and it removed 3GB!!!  Now time to tackle the other 3-4GB of "Other"
