Just joining THIS discussion because my original iPad has been crashing in Apps and Safari for months BUT as of a week ago it has been crashing even MORE! Is this happening to anyone else? I didn't think it could get any worse but I guess with Apple and their "Team of Great Minds" anything is possible when it come to their so-called "IMPROVED UPDATES".
I know opinions are not welcome here but I think Mr. Cook should do exactly that - GET COOKED!!

Well, I see that safari crashing has been a chronic problem.
I have an iPad 2, 64GB, no 3G, running iOS 6.1.2 and Safari crashes so often it's almost not worth opening it up. I close all the open apps, I have tried re-setting and re-storing. The problem won't clear up.
When I first got an iPad, it *never* crashed. Now I barely get through two emails in a row before the Safari crashes and I'm back at the home screen.
The other weird problem is, the battery shows as charging but the percentage keeps decreasing.

I know you have said you restored the device and it still is crashing. But have you restored back to the factory settings without any apps you have bought. So it should be as if you just bought it. See if that helps. If it works, I would add one app at a time to see which is causing your problem.

I too am having multiple issues w my iPad 1. The crashing, dropping out of apps, safari, very slow web browser and the keyboard is even slow to respond lately;almost as if the keys get "stuck" and there is a delay in what I type and what is displayed. Anyone else having this particular issue?
I would like to move on to ios 6, but have heard I cannot on the iPad 1. Is this true?
I have gone to tech support thru the apple store who referred me to tech support via phone line but they denied help (despite me having a case #) saying my iPad is no longer covered under their support plan. Argh.
