For iPhoto 11 what will I sacrifice in Lightroom 4 if I continue in iPhoto 11 and "edit photos in another application" vs. abandoning iPhoto in favor of Lightroom? If leaving iPhoto, what is the best way to get several hundred photos from my iPhoto Library into Lightroom?

    your question is not clear

You can not use Lightrroom to edit photos in iPhoto - it is a photo manager like iPhoto and not an editor like PhotoShop

to get several hundred photos out of iPhoto you select then in iPhoto and export (file menu ==> export) to ta desktop foplder

as to using Lightroom you need to read the LR manual or ask in the LR support forum

Thanks LarryHN. I found the way to export from iPhoto to Lightroom 4.

Lightroom 4 is a powerful photo editor as well as a photo manager. (It has more editing capabilities than iPhoto.) iPhoto 11 allows "Edit in another application," so one could use it to edit photos "within" iPhoto. That seems a bit cumbersome, so I am going with Lightroom 4 by itself. The good news is that I could go back to iPhoto from Lightroom 4 if it seems useful. Time will tell.

    Not really

Yes it can edit photos but it is not a photo editor and you can not use it as an extrnal editor with iPhoto - it is a photo manager that imports, edits and manages photos totally differently than iPhoto  --  you have to use one or the  other - you can not use LR and iPhoto together on teh same photos
