After turning off iCloud account on Mac, and then restarting, when opening iPhoto 11, I receive a message that says library needs to be updated.  Then I am asked to find missing photos that were in the librarry.   I have quite a few to cancel as a result.  Is there a way to do a "mass" update of the library?

What is the exact error message? In the iPhoto preferences is the prefernce to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" checked (default) or have you unchecked it?

When I launch iPhoto, I get message saying: "Updating Thumbnails...".  Then the wheel spins and hen get message stating: "Alert.  The photo "XXX" could not be opened, because original item cannot be found."  I have 2 buttons: "canel" and "find photo".  I cannot locate photo - and then cannot cancel the search, so end up forcing quit, and if I press the cancel button on the alert notice, I get  a large number of items to cancel - and it takes over 60 minutes to get only 50% done with the update.

As for preferences, I cannot get into Preferences since the update message appears first.

I am wondering if there is a phlist file i need to delete?

    Thanks!

when you import photos do you have them copied to the iPhoto library or do you reference them keeping the original in your own structure outside of iPhoto?

Larry: I have no idea, since I cannot get into preferences. I am wondering if I can reset iPhoto to think it is starting for the 1st time?

something to try - Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library

Without more information this is a wild guess but sinc eyou will have a good bakup if it does not work yo hae noting to lose

Ths error message you are getting usually indicates a referenced library - to have one you must have specifically changed the iPhoto preferences and you do not know if you did  - so try rebuilding the library

If that does not do it download iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  dand use it's rebuild command - this creates a totally new library leaving the existing one untouched - but neither will work if you have a referenced library

Larry:  thanks for the suggestions.  I did try to rebuild the library, and got the same message.  I will try the Libary Manager when I get home later this week as I am traveling now.  When I get home, I will also have access to a Time Capsule backup so if worse comes to worse, I will be able to restore from that.

I will update with results when I attempt the repair.

    All the best!

Larry: I had to download the iPhoto Library manager and when it rebuilt the library, the problem was corrected.  I could not get the iPhoto tool to work without recreating the same issue.

Thanks for the tip and things are OK now on this end.  Thanks again for your help!
