Same problem here after updating iPhone 5 to IOS 6.1. Before the update I had 3G connection in my house all of the time. Now it's always switching to Edge after selecting the carrier manually each time.. So this is not a hardware but a software problem. Same problem with my wife's iPhone 5. Both iPhone's were bought here in Belgium on the Apple online store and are officially unlocked.
Upgrading to 6.1.1 or 6.1.2 did not solve the problem. Now waiting for the next IOS update 6.1.3.

I have been using iPhone 5 in India since the day it got launched in Indian market. I was really very happy using this masterpiece until I updated the OS to version 6.1
After this update my iPhone 5 is not able to use 3G networks if the network strength is anything less than all 5 signal bars. Before I updated my phone to iOS 6.1 I was able to use 3G network at my office desk where the 3G network strength of 3 Signal bars is available. But these days I am stuck with EDGE network even after paying for 3G Data plan to Airtel. 3G network only works where the network strength is very strong (all 5 signal bars).
I hope Apple resolves this issue for India. I have few more friends here who are experiencing the similar issue after updating their iPhone 5 to iOS 6.1

We all have this issue....mine similar, i used to have 3g in my office room....now its on edge...and sometimes even without data coverage....
To make things worst, even my provider has issues with their system and the IP5 ompatibility...
Apple dont seem to care about this......looks like their human tech/ integrity/ethicality has seen a quick demise together with SJ .......
I have other issues like icloud backup issues that has not been replied as well......
Anyone on this Forum or Thread living closeby to their HQ in USA, could you assist us by giving them a piece of our mind...on behalf ...straight to tha face !!!!!!!!!

Thanks for comfirming the issue. Infact even I am facing an issue with iCloud backup. Since the time I have updaed the OS, my iCloud backup doesn't take place even if I leave my phone on charging whole night and connected to wifi.
Apple doesn't read these community discussions. Better ways Report a Bug on thier iPhone page. IF you are lucky you will get a call from their Support team. Here's the link to Apple's iPhone feedback page:
Give your feedback under the category 'Bug Report'
Let me know if you receive any communication from their end.

I recently got the iPhone 5 and my 3G doesnt work in my area in South Africa, I have spoke to my providers and they said I must definitely get it there which I believe because my brother in law has the iPhone 4s and he gets full 3G signal. both of us are on Cell C.iPhone 5, iOS 6.1.2

This is disappointing. I'm deciding on whether or not to buy an iPhone 5 and a friend has warned me not to because of this connectivity issue. At first I thought it was a fluke problem but after reading this thread it's very apparent Apple has dropped the ball.

It is an exceptional case. Most of us who has the issue was googling it and found this forum thread. There's not so much of us.
After I changed my handset to a new one it seems I have no more issues and iphone 5 works excellent. Not sure if it is software or hardware problem but the most handsets just doesn't have it.
My new one also doesn't have the green glow issue.

I don't know about exceptional case..
I have the 4, don't quote me on the update numbers because they have had so many....
5.1 or something like that messed my battery, 5.2 fixed it, 6.0 messed it again, they gave me a new phone, not before telling me that my phone was off of warranty and there was nothing they would do (even though the update caused battery issues, issues the rep claimed apple were unaware of, REALLY?)
Then comes along 6.1 which I have read nothing but bad reports about and I wouldn't update, 6.1.2 came out and I won't update.. I have an irritating number 1 on my setting app that lets me know there is an update available..I can't get rid of the number unless I update and like that will happen again.. With all these issues I am sure the companies who use to focus on Apple for aftermarket software will start to pay more attention to other phones..
The worst part I find is apples choice not to acknowledge the issues, I feel it shows total disrespect for their supporters.

@Vertigo, i totally agree, after all this is Apple forum and after 18 pages some representative should have picked this up and said something. Sadly this is how it goes when companies grow big, the little people's voice dissapear in the crowd.
@Arnette71, i been using iphone since 2G model and i love iPhone but today i recommend Galaxy S3 since it offers so much more. I still have my iPhone5 but i am moving more and more into using my GSIII. Just a simple thing like sending files using Bluetooth, or having live wallpapper does so much. Of course there is tons of other things i could say but you get the idea Now lets see if my post goes *poof* in a second
ps. i seriously hope iOS7 adds something more than 200 features i dont see. iOS really is great but it dont let you do allot and after 3+ years it gets boring.

I agree with you that if the after sales service for apple products can be this bad after consumer complain of having bought an impaired device then we might as well tell other users that better products do exist...SAMSUNG S3 baby!
For me it's a Nokia that is serving me well...full bars of service on my preferred network, long battery life (anybody remember that?) and ofcourse universally acclaimed customer service.
So long Apple...shame when the dream dies with the man.

I hear what you're saying... I'm coming from a WP7 Samsung Focus so I'd probably lean towards one of the Nokias if I don't pick up and iPhone.
I'm guessing these problems aren't limited to the iPhone 5 but are on 4s as well. This is really a shame. I like the Apple hardware as the iPhone is the right weight and size for what I want but there's no way I'm going to buy a nonfunctional phone.
Guess I'll hold out for a few months and wait for the NEXT software patch.

I have the same problem and it also appeared after the 6.1 update. But I have a quick method to let the 3G appears quickly instead of the E. Do a miss call to any person (let the phone rings at least once) and then the 3G will return.
Please let me know if it works with you.
