derek.g, is the Western Digital USB driver necessary? Looks like that's the problem now. I would say either uninstall it or check to see if ther's an updated version

And I know you're not going to like hearing it but this drive is VERY poorly reviewed.

Hm. The external drive I do my time machine back ups to is Western Digital, it's only hooked up when I'm backing up so isn't generally connected. How would it affect the machine when not connected...?

I'm absolutely willing to get a different drive if that will help. Any you suggest?

Derek, nothing from this recent report jumps out at me software wise so I started to look a little closer and I see something that I've not seen before and don't know what the cause/reason is. Have you ever added ram to your imac? In your report your memory is listed as Memory Module: Global_name,

in any other panic report I've ever seen the memory is listed like this

    Memory Module: BANK 0/DIMM0, 4 GB, DDR3, 1333 MHz, 0x0198, 0x4D34373142353237334248312D4348392020

    Memory Module: BANK 1/DIMM0, 4 GB, DDR3, 1333 MHz, 0x0198, 0x4D34373142353237334248312D4348392020

I'm now wondering if this is a ram problem. If you've added ram what brand was it? You might run the Apple Hardware Test in extended mode two or three times to see if it reports anything http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509

You might also download and run Rember, it does a better job checking ram http://www.kelleycomputing.net/Rember/
