My iMacs are 'fussy' about many CDs/DVDs so I use an external drive with no problems.

My 2008 iMac stopped reading any CD or DVD with its internal drive.  It spins it coughs it ejects the disk, I have tried dozens of CD's and DVD's that are perfect/new and read fine in other machines including my MacBook Pro.

I was advised that it was not cost effective to replace the internal drive and I would be better off just buying an external drive.  I purchased an Apple USB external SuperDrive... but it does not work on my iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running Mac OS X 10.7.5.  It will not accept a disk (DC or DVD) it does not make any attempt to pull the disk into the drive.  Is this expected???  Is this drive not supposed to work on my iMac??  Its almost like the USB is not powering the mechanism of the drive properly.  If the Apple USB external SuperDrive is not the right drive to buy, what is??
