Using gmail on an iphone 4s....between the inbox, and all mail inbox I feel like my email is accumulating in multiple places. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how best delete emails off the iphone permanently? I am coming off a blackberry which enabled me to delete the mail off my bb or off the bb and mailbox on computer.

iPod touch, iOS 6

Your email is not accumulating in two different places. The Inbox and All Mail are two different ways of looking at your Gmail. Inbox is just the items in your Inbox. All mail is all the mail you have in your Gmail accout, including all of the other folders.

Gmail uses the IMAP mail protocol. This means that your email account will be in sync across all of your devices. If you delete on one, it deletes on all of them.

Blackberry's email servers worked differently. And, even though you might have had Gmail, it was still all running through Blackberry.

I never look at All Mail unless I can't find something. I just stick with the Inbox and don't worry about All Mail

Another option is to use the Gmail app instead of the default Mail app.

Just one bit of advice for GMail users ... by default, messages that you delete from your device' iOS Mail app don't actually go to Trash, they get Archived to your "All Mail" folder.  But you can change this by going to to:

    • Settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendars/(GMail account name)

If you change the "Archive Messages" option to OFF, then messages that you delete actually get sent to Trash.  I discovered months worth of messages in my All Mail that I thought I had deleted.

You may not remember, but, originally, Gmail didn't even have any kind of obvious delete option when it first came out. The notion was that you would keep everything forever because it would be so easy to search.

How naive (on Google's part) .  In the beginning it didn't seem to matter, but 5 years of accumulation necessitates a little housecleaning, especially since searching seems to have its quirks.

After getting stung once by the "All Mail" setting (which in my case, was on the server since I was using Exchange for GMail) I got stung again.  As you probably know, Google stopped supporting ActiveSync, but since I was already set up I figured it would continue working as usual.  Nope, I discovered that as of about Feb 8th all my Inbox deletions were being Archived to All Mail again.  So, I've gone back to the native iOS preset for GMail (which has the Archive ON/OFF setting) and a CarDAV account for my Google Contacts.

Have you tried th Gmail app? Other than it's a tad slow to open, I like it alot.

Maybe I'm missing something but 'Archive' is a non-issue of you use the Gmail app, at least for me it is.

No you're not missing anything, I realize the Gmail app doesn't suffer from the Archive vs. Delete issue.  I've tried using it and I like many things about it, but I have other (non-Gmail) accounts I regularly use.  So for me, I find that toggling between accounts is easier within the iOS Mail app rather than toggling between the Gmail app and iOS Mail for the rest of my non-Gmail accounts.

Understood... I'm in the same multiple account boat as you but the toggling is worth it to me.

I have Gmail fetch the mail from my last remaining non-Gmail account. I started doing that when I had an Android app to avoid the multiple app issue and because the Gmail app on Androids is better than the Email app.
