Here a trick that worked for me, not sure if it will work for everybody, becouse I am in CostaRica and probably networks work different and the phone is unlockec, but is wort to try.
Here the issue I have:
If I switch from 3G to EDGE, the phone is not able to go back to 3G
Got to Settings -> Carrier -> Turn Automatic Off -> Choose another carrier, wait till the phone tell you no signal, then switch back to Automatic and that should solve the problem and you should be back on 3G.
Now seen that there is no roaming here in CostaRica, if you are somewhere else where the roaming exist, you might have to turn 'Data Roaming' off.
Hope it work as a temporary solution, however I will talk with the cell provider to see if I get replacement.
Good luck to you all :)

I have exactly the same problem here in Malaysia. It is impossible for me to get 3g. (note: me and my wife's previous iphone4 never had this issue as it gets a proper connection with the same carrier!
Apple, please do something to fix this problem ASAP !

I accept I bought an inferior high priced appliance from the richest company in the world.
Apple must have designed this iOS 6.1 to reduce the phones reception strength and prolong battery life. Sitting awkwardly with my ipod5 (that's what the 'phone' is good for now) nestled on the window of my bedroom...the only way to get reception...I began to think what would you do if you designed a bad product like this...well probably make the users think their phone companies reception was to blame right? But the 4s works perfectly! Same network and same location...I no be fool! Not fooled!!!
The iPhone 5 or iPod 5...hope this catches on...will never be as good as the 4s. I have grown to accept this. I will be getting my money back soon. With the silence this far of Apple staff to 19 pages of complaint from a 6 month old product I think they are more miffed than we are.
Sad thing...they used to be just so good. One less customer signing off...

one of the guys where I worked at replaced his iPhone5 due to this same issues.
when he got a replacement, the iOS says 6.1.2 but unfortunately after a few days of use, the issues came back.
Anyone knows if it's possible to get a replacement WITH previous iOS?
an iOS 6 perhaps?

I've the same problem with my iPhone 5 on Vodafone UK network now having intermittent 3G connectivity and battery draining like crazy even when I'm not using it, since I downloaded 6.1, then 6.1.1 and now 6.1.2
My phone was working with no problems and practically instant 3G connectivity before I downloaded these lousy updates. After being inundated with phone calls to their customer service lines, Vodafone UK sent a text to all iPhone 4S users advising not to download iOS 6.1.1 and to wait for 6.1.2 update, but it would appear the bugs have also affected iPhone 5's and 6.1.2 doesn't fix the problem.
I would ask you all to complete an Apple Feedback Form here http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html under the heading "Bug Report". The more people who "officially" report this the more chance Apple will realise this is a genuine problem and fix it

We had done that earlier, you can see we had got people from this thread to send the feedback to apple. But yet to get any reponse. Check out some of the earlier pages on the thread.
I am in Malaysia, currently 3G service on my IP5 has improved slightly, but that maybe due to the telco provider has upgraded their network. But problem on iOS 6.1.2 still persists. Ive got 10GB data package and unable to make full use of it..after seeing the poor response from apple...i now feel cheated and had made a mistake staying with apple.
SIGH--- I Really dont know why can they address this issue, after all its an impotant aspect, **** why get a iphone with all the sweet apps and features but cant get full use of it as the 3G network keep getting limp and everytime this happens $%^&RESET! #$TURN ON/OFF^&*( to get it back up....or at times even that doesnt help.....

Having spoken to an Apple Store Manager and also Customer Service (UK /EIR), I have been told in no uncertain terms that, from a business perspective, the 'few' people who have phone issues do not warrant support / help/ solutions, in repect of the over-all billions of customers they have, and who have no issues.
I was told to buy a new phone, even tho my current one 'sometimes' works but Apple no longer support it. Built in obsolescence of about 3 years is acceptable to Apple (and others) even if there IOS renders the older phones (which worked) un-usable. (Oh, and dont try to retro-install IOS-5!! )
It will be an exceptional member of staff who decides to make this worthy of a follow up and solve everyones issues at a personal level.... alas, we are not living in 1955 consumer world.
Welcome, to the machine.

I have the same problem too here in Sri Lanka. Using a factory unlocked 16Gb model. I am rarely getting 3G on my iPhone 5 always connecting to edge. Rebooting and toggling airplane mode doesn't seem to fix either. My iPhone 4 has no problem connecting to 3G, even though it drops to edge i can recover by toggling airplane mode.
