Well, thanks Apple, for a dumpster-load of pants software that's just wasted half a day of my time.

If your software is going to be this cretinous, why don't you go the whole hog and just call yourself 'Microsoft'?

Yes, pretty please, sarcastic Administrator, could you please, please, please tell me how to set up an iCloud account on my PC? My MacBook Pro is having open-heart surgery, and I really don't want to buy an iPhone just so I can access my files.

    Please?

How rude can you be .....

    Work it out for yourself.

Well, Csound, I apologise for my rudeness, but the reason I've ended up here is that, like thousands of others, I can't work it out for myself, because Apple seems to have done everything they can to make their software unusable. Surely, if nothing else, that is a counter-intuitive marketing strategy. And counter to everything Apple once stood for.

You can not create an iCloud account using a PC, I do not know how to make the explanation simpler than that

Thankyou for putting it very clear. That's all I needed to know. What would be really helpful, would be if this was mentioned on the screen where you begin your Apple ID process or iCloud downloading process. I have a PC, and just downloaded iCloud, got an Apple ID so I could use iCloud but can't use it. This was a major inconvience trying to find out WHY I kept getting the "this apple ID is valid but is not an iCloud account" message. It would be really helpful to just clearly mention this "minor" detail in the beginning. Thanks.

It is mentioned on the first page, in section 1, did you not read it?

I've paid for icloud for my pc £21.99 a year....but I too get the same conflicting message.

Why make it so difficult. I cannot access my icloud account, because I don't have another device other than my pc or android phone. Great!

iCloud is a free service, you must have some extra storage for it. The requirements for iCloud have been the same since it came out, and are posted on the web.

I don't really understand why you have an iCloud account, without a Mac or an IOS device what are you sharing with?

    Hello everyone!

I do have the same issue here. Bought a new iPhone 5 (6.1.4). Using iTunes create Apple ID and trying to login in iphone to iCloud: Settings-iCloud - it says that i exceeds the number of free accounts? What is this?

From the other side - I used my apple id t log in in App store and downlod software. No problem here.

Trying to log in to www.icloud.com - it says that i have valid apple ID but it's not an iCloud account. It still doesnt let me create iCloud account on iPhone.

    Any help here?

    Thanks in advance.

I am having the same issue.  I would like to be able to view my coworkers photostreams, but I do not have any Mac devices.  Can I log in to my apple ID and activate my i-cloud  on their device then will it work on my PC?

Maybe, but take great care not to download any of your data to their computer. And remove your login details from their computers.

Sensible thing would be to get a Mac.

I am going to give it a try and I'll let you know what I come up with.  Thanks for the gentle nudge toward Mac, but I will stick with my Android.

This was helpful.  It allowed me to view their photo stream in a browser without makeing my apple ID a valid iCloud account.

So, I was able to active my I-cloud when I logged in to my apple ID on my friend's mac.  This did allow me to open my photostream on my PC, but I was not able to subscripe to another photo stream without opening the invite to her photostream in my Mac mail whick I do not have on my PC.  So, I have yet another dead end.  I don't plan to jump thru anymore apple exclusive hoops to subsribe to her photostream.  The link I shared above is a good enough solution for now.

Just a suggestion ….. The iCloud download instruction says: “To enable iCloud on your Windows PC (Windows 7 or 8 required), first set up iCloud on your other devices, then install the iCloud Control Panel for Windows.”  Would it be better, clearer and pinpoint to add Apple between “other devices”, so that everyone can see that an Apple device must be used to set up iCloud. When I first saw “other devices”, I didn’t know exactly what they meant, other brand of devices (Apple? Dell? Lenovo?) or other kind of devices (smart phone? tablet? desktop? lap top?).  This would save some arguments as seen in this thread.
