Hi,

I've just got a new Macbook with Mountain Lion. I backed up my old Mac (Lion) using Carbon Copy Cloner - although i'm not sure whether it was a bootable back up (when i plug the external harddrive in it shows multipe folders - users, systems, library, applications etc...).

How do I transfer Aperture , Final Cut Pro, iWork, and iLife and all of their saved contents (projects, pictures etc...) over to my new mac. The Genius today told me that because I didn't do a time machine back up I should be careful when transfering these as certain program files may have changed and will have an affect on the new machine...

Also, I should mention that I don't have Final Cut Pro, Aperture or iWork installed on my new mac.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks, Aaron

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

    Hi aaronwatts,

Do you still have the old Mac with all your stuff on it? If so, take a look at this Migration Assistant Support article from Apple:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4413

    Hope this helps!

No, it was a replacement and the store took my old one...

Was your old one totally unusable? What did they offer in terms of getting your stuff off of it and moved over to the new Mac?

I would go back into the store with your new Mac and your backup, and explain what happened. It seems to me that they should be able to help you to get your stuff over to the new machine.

You say it was a replacement. Was it replaced because of a faulty hardware, or replaced as a result of "user induced" damage? The reason I ask is because the circumstances around the replacement kind of dictate the level of obligation (if any) that the store has to help you out here.

    Can you fill me in?

    Thanks,

This is the story from the start...

    - Multiple hard drives, logic boards and minor parts failed and replaced by Apple

    - So the penultimate time the hard drive failed I backed everything up (in the way mentioned above)

    - They put new hard drive in (therefore I recieve my macbook back but without any data on it) and it fails the day I get it back again.

    - Ring Applecare, they give me new laptop

They offered to help me put my files back on if I did a time machine backup and If I had the external drive with me, which I didn't. I told him I carbon cloned it - as i done a lot of research into time machine and didn't like the way it had the power to delete older files once the hard drive was nearing full (and certain other ways it operated compares to doing it with Carbon Copy). I did this back up before the hard drive started to fail, otherwise I would have done a simple time machine back up, get new machine and do a simple restore. I didn't know I was going to be using this Carbon Copy to restore these apps and contents...

Thanks a lot for your help...

Well, considering the repeated issues that you had leading up to the replacement, all not your fault, it would behoove the store to help you get your files onto your replacement. They will help someone move files to a Mac from a Windows machine....

Any chance you could contact them to see what they would be willing to do? Seems like they could go a bit out of the way to help you out on this....

Otherwise, (and sorry I jumped in here), but it might be a good idea to repost your original inquiry. There are a lot of people on this community (Linc Davis and Kappy being a couple), who probably can help you to figure out what is safe to transfer over and what may cause issues....

    Best of luck!

LINC DAVIS, KAPPY, NIEL, ALLAN, VARJAK - can any of you help Aaron out? He's had a rough time of it with his hardware, and needs help to get his files over to the replacement Mac that was given to him by his Apple Store. I did the best I could, but we need someone with real expertise to jump in at this point!

    Thanks!

    Hi Aaron,

Hoping they see their names in my last post. There is no way to contact them directly, but they are always providing support on the site. So, they should see my post (hopefully)....

Give them a little time to see it - I'm fairly certain one or more of them will respond!

If you external HDD is a copy made from Carbon Copy Cloner, boot the new MPD holding down the OPTION key.  You should see HDD icons for you new MBP and CCC.  Select the CCC icon.  When it opens, select the CCC application.  In the Source field, select the CCC HDD and in the Destination field select the new MBP HDD.  Click on the clone button.

    Ciao.

    Hi Ogelthorpe, thanks.

If I do this do I have to transfer everything that is on the HDD or can I choose what files I want and which I do not? I ask this ask when I did the copy I didn't include my "movies" folder. Then once the carbon copy completed I transfered my movies file to the HDD seperatly....

It should transfer every thing that is on the CCC HDD.  If not, then you can transfer the movies separately by attaching the CCC HDD, clicking on it and 'drag and drop' the movie folder.  Nothing will be deleted from the CCC HDD.

    Ciao.

    Okay cool.

But if the carbon copy was made on Lion and my new OS is Mountain Lion, will this have an affect on the way apps work??

The only apps i'm worried about are iWorks (as I dont have original disk so need to transfer these apps via carbon copy), as well as iPhoto - as I have all my photos on it.

Should I just transfer the iWork apps via drag and drop (then do any updates they say I need. and then when I drag and drop the iWork files (pages files mainly) will they work fine?

And with the iPhoto photos, should I just drag and drop the iPhoto library file - as I won't need the App as it's already installed on my new mac...

Just a little confused as to how my new mac will accept the Apps and it's files as they are from an older OS...

Sorry if this is a little confusing...

    thanks so much.....

There is a slim possibility that some updating may be needed, but I am not aware of any applications that are not compatible with with Mt. Lion that are with Lion.  I would just transfer the data and see what happens.

If the iPhoto version is different then the one on the clone, then you may have to make an adjustment.  The newer the clone, the less likely there will be any incompatibilities.  Understand that the data on the clone will remain intact, so this is not a high risk operation.

    Ciao.

Gail from Maine, greetings;  Oz is a wondrous place.  It is a reflection of my belief that there should always be some whimsy in life.

    Ciao.
