Hi I am using a 13" mid 2009 MacBook Pro with Lion.

The screen on my computer went black today and couldn't get it to recover. I switched it off and on by holding down the power button for few seconds. It starts up nicely screen comes on. The animated loading icon comes up on a white screen.  Then it gets to the user login stage (still on as usual)  I click on my user icon then bam! An all black abyss of frustration that's threatening my bank account!

So on and off again, same story, then gets to user login stage then this time the screen goes black after just couple of seconds.

The keyboard backlight won't come on.The sound does still work, I  it up my Mac tells its already on full with the "blep, belp, blep" SFX.

Whats wrong with my Mac? I fear its a hardware problem and may be the motherboard. I am not sure I am using the correct power supply, I may have been using one of my old magsafe of chargers for a 15" but the one I am using now does seem to work find and is fully functional with this computer correct or incorrect.

All help much appreciated ...and needed right now too

If you have the installation discs that came with computer when you bought it, then see what happens when you boot from the installer Disc One.

Booting From An OS X Installer Disc

    1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.

      2. Restart the computer.

      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.

      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple

          logo appears.

      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

Thanks for the reply. What will this do exactly?

It will tell us if the problem is most likely hardware or software. If the former then you'll see the same thing happen booting from the installer disc. If the latter then the installer will boot fine with no problem indicating a problem with your OS X installation.

I'm opened my Mac this morning and got past the user login! Strangely its came  on all on its own. Now I'm using to type this message. Although the problem could well still exist  and its something I can't afford to leave alone.

Why do you think this has happened and does this help determine the hardware/software issue?

    Thanks

I'm afraid it doesn't decide anything. Hardware problems can be intermittent. Replacing the software is the only way to remove it from suspicion. Usually, a screen turning black is not a good sign.
