When I try to sync / back up my iPhone 4S to iTunes, it gets to 'Step 4' then it says that the connection was lost. I'm not sure why it's doing it - but it's starting to get annoying now, and I've tried doing quite a few things, and it's still the same.

Does any one have any ideas??

Thanks

It sounds like you're doing a wifi sync.  Try using the USB cable instead.  At least you will get a sync done.

I agree. Given the delicate nature of a sync, if you have a flaky Wi-Fi infrastructure doing it OTA seems foolhardy. USB will be much faster anyway.

That's the thing - It's plugged in. It's not a wifi sync - the iPhone is actually connected by USB =/

And it's not a faulty cable coz it used to work perfectly, and it charges the phone no problem - it's the syncing which is an issue; and I think it started when iTunes 11 came out, but I'm not 100% sure.

Key words being "used to". Things do break down and fail. Try to bum another cable from someone to eliminate as a suspect.

I tried using a different cable now, but it's still doing the same thing.

I am having the same problem.  My iPhone will not sync over wi-fi at all, it keeps saying it can't find the phone, and when I plug it in with the USB it says the connection is lost and it won't complete the sync.  I have tried multiple USB cords with the same results.  Thoughts?

I am using a brand new iPhone 5s, and having the same issues. This may have been a fluke, but here is what I did that seemed to remedy the problem (for now anyway):

    1. While iPhone was plugged into Macbook, I unticked "Sync Music," then unticked "Sync Photos," in order to basically create a blank slate on my phone, eliminating the possibility of anything getting in the way of the sync. Weirdly, even though I didn't try to sync it, all of the photos and music were removed from the iPhone immediately.

    2. I kind of wondered if the "other" storage (mine was pretty sizeable) was connected to this syncing issue, so I went into my iCloud settings on my iPhone, and found that it had saved about 4GB of data from previous backups of phones I don't use anymore. I deleted them, since I've already got everything backed up to my computer as well.

    3. I plugged the phone back in, opened up iTunes, and ticked "Sync Music" again. Everything synced.

*NOTE* After syncing the music (just under 4GB on a 16GB phone), iTunes is now refusing to sync photos from iPhoto onto my phone. I can import photos to iPhoto, but I can't put photos from iPhoto onto my phone. This works for me, for now, though I will look for a solution to this new problem. If anyone has a better way of working this out, please share.

Also, I'm thinking step 1 probably wasn't necessary, and may have been the cause of the photo syncing issue, but it was something I did per someone else's advice. Step 2, I think, is what helped the most.

You should be able to sync photos from iPhoto to the Photo app on the iPhone, but not to the Camera Roll, which can only send to a computer, not receive.
