I have tried repeatedly to convert a wav file to mp3 using iTunes and it just won't work the way this article says.  What am I doing wrong?

My machine is Snow Leopard but the wife has Lion and neither will let me drag the file into the library to convert it!  I can play the file with Quicktime.

    If you want to use iTunes to convert it you must first add the WAV file to the iTunes library, it will then show (correctly) as being a WAV file. You then check the iTunes import preference is set to MP3, then you select the WAV track in iTunes and in the Advanced menu tell it to convert it to MP3.

    A WAV file has no embedded meta-data, so when you add it to iTunes it will not immediately showup under an artist name, or have track and album information. So it maybe there but you may need to look for something that appears blank and manually add the data. (iTunes will store the data in its catalog for a WAV file.)

    Once you have converted to MP3 then the MP3 can contain this information.

    Here you go:

    1) iTunes -> Preferences

    2) Click "Import Settings" under "General"

    3) Change "Import Using" to MP3

    4) Click OK and exit Preferences

    1) Select the song in iTunes

    2) File -> Create New Version -> Create MP3 Version
