If the DVDs you purchased have a digital copy, you can transfer that to iTunes. If it does not, you cannot. From the iTunes support page:
iTunes and QuickTime Pro do not support importing content from DVD videos. DVD and Blu-ray purchases may include an iTunes Digital Copy.
If you do have a digital copy, you can click on the link above or on this link for instructions:

Mar 7, 2013 5:37 AM in response to Jannekejannyby Skydiver119,★HelpfulGetting those purchased DVD's onto your iPad will probalby require you to break the CSS encoding, which is something we cannot help you with here since it's against the TOU. If you want to rip the dvd's then you'd need to look on other sites for the how.
For your means, it'd probably be easier and quicker to purchase a digital copy.

Mar 7, 2013 5:40 AM in response to Jannekejannyby Meg St._Clair,To expand a bit on gail's explanation, commercial DVDs are encrypted. In the U.S., breaking that encryption, a necessary first step in copying, is illegal, so, unless the DVDs came with a digital copy, there is no legal way to copy them to your iPad. And, not surprisingly, we can't discuss the illegal ways here.

Mar 7, 2013 5:51 AM in response to Jannekejannyby Jannekejanny,Thanks for trying to help....these are older DVD's so no digital copy available ...he will simply have to watch them on his laptop. the iPad is so much more convenient for that purpose and the battery life is much better. Maybe some day new technology and old technology will find a way to be compatible.
