    Hi,

I'd like to point out that it is now 2013 and thousands of people are still complaining about this problem.

    Thanks, Apple.

Yup. Apple has done nothing to address this.  As much as I love Apple, I'm switching my companies devices over to blackberry.   This by the way is why many companies can't use iPhones.

I once got very good info from Apple guys. There is a feedback site- Apple.com/feedback.

If enough people feedback apple that wi fi connection/VPN is more important to them then battery life, apple will change that. Good luck!

I sent feedback to apple at apple.com/feedback .

When I submitted the form they informed me that they don't care enough to contact me back but most assuredly someone will read my feedback.

I recommend that if you're having this problem you should do the same. Maybe if enough people complain they'll do something to stop the complaints.

This may have been said already, so I’m sorry for the repost.

Just to make sure I understand everyone’s issue with the iPad and iPhone (IOS4 software or higher.)

You’re all connecting to VPN via one of the 3 types of protocols. It really doesn’t matter which VPN protocol you’re using.

Your issue: As long your iPad or iPhone is ON and connected to VPN all is working as designed. But once you press the (Sleep/Wake button) your VPN session drops.  Or when your iPad or iPhone goes into (Auto-Lock) your VPN session drops.

I think the issue is that these device are not Laptops so when they go into (Auto-lock) or when you press the (Sleep/Wake button) it break the VPN session, The device goes to sleep mode not screen saver mode like you can configure a laptop to do.  These devices don’t have a screen saver mode that I’m aware of.

Think of it like this, you’re connected to VPN on your Laptop at a coffee shop, you close your lid of your laptop to go somewhere else, and your computer goes into sleep mode. You get to your destination open the lid to your laptop and your laptop is no longer connected to VPN. This would be because your computer went to sleep. Now you can configure your laptop to not go into sleep mode when the lid is closed, but unfortunately the iPad or iPhone are not designed that way.

I know your looking for a solution from Apple, but think about it, if your VPN stay connected when your device is locked, you run the chance of running out your data plan and getting charged over usage fees on your cell plan, or possibly going to a website you company may not like.

Finally until apple creates a lock screen like Windows or Mac computer have, the iPad and iPhone will drop their VPN connections.

Hey apple support group, any comments on that?

That's a poor analogy because other connections don't drop when my iPhone's screen is off. I still receive notifications when I get an email, instant message, tweet or other message.

Even if that were the case, the least they could do would be to make the VPN automatically reconnect when the screen is unlocked.

Having to go into Settings and turn it on every time the screen is unlocked makes the feature pointless. It might as well not even be there if it's going to be broken in such a way. I don't understand why Apple would knowingly include a feature that is so completely broken when they are usually so anal about perfection.

Actually you have it only partially correct... Sleep is different on an iPhone than on a Mac. Unless it is physically turned off, the iPhone keeps checking email and getting push messages even while sleeping. (Thus the notifications while it is in your pocket or during the night) Unfortunately, it doesn't keep the VPN connection while doing this. So, the unacceptable scenario is when you turn on a VPN connection to secure your email and messages, but the phone "goes to sleep" and drops the VPN... but the email keeps coming as the phone then checks it insecurely without the VPN. Your only option to keep secure at that point is to diconnect from any open WiFi if it is asleep.

It's a great analogy, the other things work because the iPhone and iPad were designed that way. If VPN automatically reconnected that would be very unsecure. Both of you Foxmajik and G J Piper answer me this, when was the last time your computer (not iphone or ipad) was in sleep mode and you receive emails and push notification?

Excellent last posts, I think there finally some understanding of why phone does not stay connected to VPN (intended behavior) while in standby/sleep. Now if you could just read last sentence of my previous post

"If enough people feedback apple that wi fi connection/VPN is more important to them then battery life, apple will change that."

Do you really think it is going to happen? There thousands of people on that very same community complain about their battery life, especially after updates and there handful of VPN users. But if you want that to happen, feedback.

If Apple is going to have VPN on our IOS devices then clearly they understand the need for secure traffic.  Why on earth when it is enabled do they not have an option to NOT PERMIT TRAFFIC without VPN connection?

People who use VPN are doing so for a reason and Apple closing the connection and permitting traffic without it makes it even more of a security risk because you don't realize when it happens.

For example, your at an airport and turn it on to secure your wifi data and a few moments later while your checking your email or doing some banking it turn off and your in the clear.

@Rasapi: Computers don't receive email or push notifications when in sleep mode. iPhones do, and should. I don't want the iPhone VPN to reconnect... I want it to STAY connected.

I'd be happy if it reconnected automatically, but I can't get my iPhone 5 to do that.

Starting Cisco AnyConnect once and confirming the changes worked great for me.

That's great if you have a Cisco VPN but not everyone does, so you're proclaiming a resolution to a different issue than the one stated here.

The post I was replying to talks about launching the app once and confirming the first prompt which appears to change some underlying settings which may help with the issue described in this thread (and in fact did for me) even if you do not use the app/have a cisco router (which I don't).

But whatever. If you think it's more effective to complain to people sharing their solution, do that instead.
