Which format of partition should be choosen to install OS 10.4.11 on a new partition of an internal HD using 10.6.8 on an intel core 2 duo?

I'm looking to install some softwares that won't work on my actual 10.6.8. In order to do that, I've read here in the forums, that it is possible to partition my internal drive and install an earlier OS (10.4.11 in this case) on the new partition created. That way, I could run two OS on my 2.4 Ghz Mac Intel-Core Duo 2.

My only questions are:

-Which format (Mac OS Extended Journaled?) of partition should I choose for the one I want to create?

-Will I loose data / applications / anything on the actual HD if I do the partition?

Thank y'all so much in advance for your help and experiences.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo 2
