turning off audio in message

There would be considerable advantage to having message running in my office so as to receive texts throughout the day but I cannot have the interuption of the audio reading messages as they come in. I could not figure out how to turn it off.

    try this:

    system preferences > accessability > voiceover > uncheck enable voiceover


    I think that might be what's doing it.

    It is more likely to be Messages Menu > Preferences > Alerts > (Message received in top item drop down) and the Speech tick box.

    Also check the Text Invitation setting.

    In Buddy Lists

    These can be individually set to a Buddy at a time.

    Highlight a Buddy in  Buddy list.

    Use the CMD and i keys (Get Info) together to see the info panel.

    Change the tab to Alerts

    Same setting as above.
