This also happened to me - twice. I was having trouble with receiving text messages and turned off the phone. When I turned it back on, all of my contacts had gone leaving only phone numbers behind.

DId you find a solution?
The same has just happened to me - a phone full of Contacts suddenly has none; absolutely none.
And I haven't backed up for ages, so wondered how this could happen and if anyone has found a fix without having to recover an old back-up

Has anyone found a solution for this? The same happened to me this weekend. My phone was functioning normally, I put it down for a while, I checked it later for messages and all my text message contacts were listed only as numbers. I tried restarting my phone, but it didn't solve the issue. Is there any way to recover the data other than through an older backup? I do not relish the thought of losing contact information updated since the last backup.
Any information or insight will be incredibly helpful!

Same thing happens with me, several contacts remain Ok, but randomly some of them either get all data erased but the company name and person name, or get all data erased but the phone number.
I'm not synn with Icloud, just with Outlook. And settings are that the iPhone contacts should overwrite the Outlook ones. So what the heck is going on, anyone has a clue?

Same thing here.
My Messages and Mail apps were crashing (close as soon as I open them), so I powered off my phone, which took longer than usual. When I turned it back on, apps were working but my contacts were gone.
I have a 4s and for some reason still run on 5.1.
I'm at work so I have to wait until I get home to see if I backed up my contacts. Might swing by the Apple store on my way. If I find anything out I'll update here!

OK. i solved this by going to settings, icloud, and putting the "contacts" toggle back on..... how did it turn itself off??? anyway. fixed. contacts back to norm.
hope this helps? :S
this exact thing happened to me: from txsunrunner "My phone was functioning normally, I put it down for a while, I checked it later for messages and all my text message contacts were listed only as numbers. I tried restarting my phone, but it didn't solve the issue. "

This also happened to my wife's 4s. It just randomly lost a portion of its contacts and started showing just phone numbers. I too was able to recover them by selecting the iCloud contacts option but I also noticed that, unlike my 5s, she does not have the option to use "On My iPhone" for a default contacts location. I wondered if something got corrupted in her SIM card. I ejected, cleaned, and reinserted it but that did not restore the option. Does anyone else see this same behavior after a random loss of contacts? I'm wondering if a factory reset would remedy this. Both of us are running iOS 7.0.4.
