Q: What kind of disk drive can I use for Time Machine?

I want to attach a disk drive to my AirPort Extreme and use it for both Time Machine backups and storage for my home WiFi connected computers.  I believe that there are restrictions on the kind of disk drive that I can use and that the restrictions have are due to the storage protocol that's used by Time Machine.  Can someone confirm this and tell me the protocol that's required.  Thanks for the help.

AirPort Extreme, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
