Hi,

My Macbook 1,1 started to not boot to OS X. It would show the grey screen with the Apple logo, then reboot. I realized that if I held down option (which shows the selectable boot drives) I could pick my normal startup disk and the computer would boot to OS X. However, I have to do this each time I start up the computer. Does anyone know what the right thing to do is in this situation?

Thanks!

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi,

Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.

Then in Sys Prefs>Startup Disk, selct your normal boot drive.

I have, but it didn't do anything. I've also tried booting into single user mode and using the terminal command to check the disk for errors, but none were found.

This issue started after my battery ran out and the computer shut itself down, so I figured it was a PRAM issue, but apparently it isn't.

It certainly sounds like a PRAM issue, but I guess it could be real early in the boot driver, do you have an external drive you can try installing to?

OK, here's the update. I tried a PRAM reset again, and this time it acted differently. When the problem first started and I tried a PRAM reset, I'd have to hold the buttons down for about 10 seconds before the computer would restart. When I just tried it again a few minutes ago, it restarted almost instantly and actually booted to OS X. So I guess problem solved? Very weird that it didn't work before.

Great to hear, could be "just one of those things", but if I didn't know better, & I don't, I'd suspect PRAM Battery problems!

Update just in case others have the same issue:

My MacBook stopped booting to OS X again and the PRAM reset stopped working. I tried all of the special boot options and nothing worked. One in a great while I could get into OS X. I tried a Disk Repair and Permissions Repair, but they wouldn't work. I was able to boot to my install DVD and use that version of Disk Utility to run a repair. This seems to have fixed the problem and I can now boot to OS X 100% of the time.
