Q: suggestions for making itunes run?

I've had itunes for years. A few months ago I upgraded to latest version and could no longer buy from the apple store. Tech support couldn't help so I've been buying from Amazon.

I'm on Windows XP and have UNinstalled and Installed itunes at least 5 times.

Recently, I can't get the application to open correctly. Today, the only way I can get a song to play in itunes is to browse to an mp3 and double click. Since itunes is my default player it will open up and start playing the song. However none of the controls work, can't even pause the song. Can't shut it down either, even from task manager.

What I'm doing now is hitting ctrl - shift - esc, browsing to the itunes process and killing it there.

Any help would be appreciated, including suggestions on an alternate player.

Do you get an error message when you try to launch iTunes? If so, what does it say? (Precise text, please.)

I created a new Windows account. iTunes tried to start. I'd get the main UI, and it was trying to access itunes store. no other buttons worked, could not "scan for music" etc. Tried it in safe mode too. (tried safe mode for the original xp account as well.)

So iTunes "didn't start" differently in the new XP account, I'm still stuck. back to that document to see if there's anything else i can try.

Wow. Looks like system-wide is where I go next. I'd rather install another player than go through all that.

any suggestions on a competing player? I'd like to just point it at all my music and then be able to create playlists etc.
